The position of Forest Products Utilization & Marketing Forester II provides subject matter expertise to fulfill MFSs mission of education assistance resource information and analyses to multiple audiences.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This is professional forestry work involved in promoting informed decisions about Maines forests to a wide variety of audiences with a focus on forest products. Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Provide technical services and training related to forest products to wood processors mills landowners loggers and foresters.
  • Gather track analyze and disseminate information and data regarding utilization and markets for wood and other forest products.
  • Provide forest policy analyses to help support Maines forest products economy.
  • Collaborate with other agencies and entities to promote diverse forest products. Identify disseminate and manage grants available to forest products entities.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations reports informational materials and correspondence about forest products and related resources.

The position collaborates closely with a team of MFS field program and leadership staff and would occasionally work with and advise department staff and leadership. There is partial remote work flexibility with this position following DACF Telework guidelines and management approval.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in Forestry or related field and four (4) years field experience involving inspection and supervision of harvesting operations surveying cruising timber making and general forest management planning. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Licensed as a Registered Professional Forester from the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Foresters.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Stewardship broad knowledge and appreciation of the economic ecological and social values of Maines forests with specific familiarity and experience with the forest products supply chain harvesting wood procurement & processing.
  • Analyst ability to compile interpret and analyze quantitative and qualitative data using sophisticated methods to generate required and supplemental MFS reports.
  • Collaborator ability to work independently within a team and with outside entities.
  • Initiative - identify needs seek additional resources and initiate efforts to address emerging issues including new markets mills businesses technologies and products.
  • People person ability to communicate easily tactfully and professionally with all audiences from the forest industry to Maines wider forest land use community.
  • Recorder/reporter capable of preparing effective reports assessments and other documentation in written and electronic formats.
