SUMMARY OF POSITION:

This position is responsible for the initial inspection and write-up of repairs required to maintain company lessee and customer fleets.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position reports to the Plant Manager or Plant Production Manager/Repair Manager. Depending on the facility various other supervisory positions report to the same individual including Repair Manager Maintenance Supervisor Stores Supervisor and the Environment/Safety Coordinators etc. The shop Write-Up Inspectors report to the Write-Up Supervisor.

The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of all Write-Up Inspectors and hourly support staff to ensure inspections of cars are made upon arrival and all defects are written up in a prompt accurate manner. This individual also has responsibility for assuring repairs have been completed to an acceptable quality standard prior to shipment. This includes assigning work to the Write-Up Inspectors as well as ensuring all appropriate documents required in conjunction with repairs are prepared to expedite car repairs.

High dollar write-ups as well as repairs involving a Union Tank Car claim against the lessee are reviewed by the incumbent for content validity and accuracy. The incumbent monitors all paperwork for write-up and participates in quality investigates further as required. The incumbent maintains records on time limits for Railroad Joint Inspection Certificates and ensures JIC and railroad write-ups provide the fullest protection for the addition the incumbent represents the company on joint inspections of cars with railroad representatives and other outside parties.

The Write-Up Inspectors generally proceed alone on routine work but will involve the Write-Up Supervisor when something is unclear or cases like these the Write-Up Supervisor must make the decision on how to proceed. He/she is responsible for the constant training of all write-up/hourly support personnel in all aspects of inspection and write-up in accordance with current governing regulatory rules and customer specifications.

There are many duties inherent in this position. This includes write-up and pricing of labor for repairs; coding of all materials used in repairs and the ability to measure car parts and use various gages associated with material inventories and various Union Tank Car Departments to effectively perform in this addition to supervising the Write-Up Inspector the incumbent is also required to perform inspections as required as well as monitor final and in-process inspections on cars.

The dollar responsibility of this position is substantial. Improper handling of write-ups repairs and claims could cause Union Tank Car Company to lose a great deal of money as well as customer satisfaction.

In order to perform the essential functions of the job the incumbent must possess at a minimum the following skills and abilities:

  • Climb ladders to heights of approximately 14 ft. high bend stoop stretch lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. to set up tables and to attach to tank cars.
  • Enter tank cars via a manway opening approximately to 18 inches in diameter.
  • Be able to tolerate both heights and confined spaces.
  • Have keen visual and audio acuity to recognize various shop danger warning signals to avoid injuries and promote a safe working environment.
  • Possess considerable stamina to perform the essential functions over a large geographical plant area.
  • Ability and availability to work considerable overtime hours that may often be required.
  • Be willing and able to wear safety equipment such as but not limited to: safety shoes safety glasses hard hats earplugs and respirators.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QULIFICATIONS:

  • This position requires a high school diploma
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as a Write-Up Inspector preferred
  • The incumbent must know tank car construction and parts be able to recognize defects and be familiar with all AAR and FRA regulatory rules.
  • The incumbent must be able to supervise his/her work force in a manner that ensures efficient shop operations.
  • The position requires good organizational skills good computer skills and knowledge of software programs required for preparation of Repair Orders and various reports. Some additional training in software product in use may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises Write-Up Inspectors in the proper handling of all inspections write-ups of repairs and final and in process inspections of cars to expedite car movement thru the shop and directs the hourly work force assigned to the inspection shop on the correct preparation of cars prior to the write inspection.
  • Ensures the validity of all inspections and write-ups and final inspections in accordance with governing regulations.
  • Monitors all paperwork including high dollar write-ups and Union Tank Car claims against lessees and Joint Inspection Certificates to ensure maximum profitability for Union Tank Car on all repairs performed. Ensures hours and materials are properly charged and coded.
  • Represents the company on joint inspections of cars with railroad representatives and other outside parties.
  • Works closely with scheduling group to maintain a balanced flow through the front-end processes of the shop to facilitate the downstream production needs.
  • Actively implements and trains employees in accordance with the companys safety industrial hygiene and environmental policies and programs and enforces compliance with published work rules.
  • Participates in and actively supports Quality projects and activities and responsible care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.

69525.00 - 84975.00
