Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The role is focused on providing a wholesome safe and happy learning environment for all children through modelling the example of Jesus.
Responsible for organizing planning and implementing a program that is responsive to the spiritual social physical emotional educational and recreational needs of each child under the direction of the Program Coordinator. Ensure all activities are age appropriate and co-constructed in such a way as to provide an effective and safe learning and development experience for every child while intentionally reflecting the mission of Small Blessings.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The incumbent may perform all some or similar range of duties.
Child Development and Care:

  • Support Program Coordinator in facilitating of the development and behaviour of children.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of the age-appropriate programs.
  • Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive language social emotional creative and physical development of children and acceptance of diversity.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with the children.
  • Identify and expand upon learning opportunities (teachable moments).
  • Identify and support childs individual learning and development.
  • Identify and support diversity equity and inclusion.
  • Meet health welfare and safety needs.
  • Implement preventative health and safety measures.
  • Follow safe travelling and off-site practices while provide adequate supervision during these times.
  • Provide first-aid and CPR. Protect children from physical and emotional harm.
  • Implement emergency and evacuation plan.
  • Identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and actively supervise children.
  • Meet nutritional needs.
  • Accommodate for special nutritional requirements. Model and teach proper table manners.
  • Establish with colleagues an environment to foster positive behaviour in the program.
  • Guide and observe children. Implement positive behaviour guidance.
  • Facilitate appropriate language conflict resolution empathy problem-solving and coping skills.
  • Use and promote active listening skills.

Equipment & Facilities:

  • Develop and maintain a safe environment.
  • Check for physical hazards.
  • Maintain and implement safety standards and protocols.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment.
  • Operate and maintain facilities.
  • Maintain equipment materials and furnishings.
  • Maintain indoor and outdoor physical environment.
  • Monitor cleanliness and sanitation of all areas used by children as per policy and guidelines.

Family and Community Relations:

  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships with families.
  • Orient families to the program.
  • Provide family resources.
  • Raise awareness of community events.
  • Advocate for children and families.
  • Provide an inclusive environment.
  • Collaborate with parents to identify strengths needs and interests of the child.

Record Keeping

  • Log incidents for parents and program log/record.
  • If applicable attendance at parent meetings staff meetings and other job-related activities will be part and parcel of this job description and the agreed salary.

Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:

  • Minor level of material responsibilities (proper use and safekeeping of toys equipment etc.).
  • Uses or maintains organization assets in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children room set-up moderate amount of teaching leading etc.
  • Occasional computer work

  • The incumbent is required to lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance from others.

  • Must sign to acknowledge you have received read and understand the following if applicable for the province:

  • Provincial Early Childhood Services Act and Regulations.
  • Provincial Operator Manual for Full-time and Part-time Early Learning and Childcare Centres.
  • The Child Victims of Abuse Protocols of the Province.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.

Education Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college Diploma program of at least one full academic year in Early Childhood Education from a recognized institution or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a current valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
  • Must complete the mandatory provincial curriculum training and hold certification required by the province.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • One year of related experience.
  • Preferably knowledge and experience in supervising and implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.

Skills and Capabilities

  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion (i.e. The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
  • Ability to communicate in kind peaceful manner.
  • Ability to stay calm and patient.
  • Ability to work with supervision.
  • Ability to conduct self professionally and follow policies and procedures and use code of ethics to guide practice.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain required professional certifications and/or registrations and keep up to date with legislative requirements.
  • Maintain a work/life balance.
  • Engage in on-going self-assessment.
  • Maintain physical health and mental well-being.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Advocate for the profession.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $19.93 to $24.91 with a maximum of $29.89.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
