Job Summary

ASE is a diverse school focusing on the connections between geosciences ecology society and Earth systems. Our approach integrates these disciplines to examine big environmental challenges both in Southeast Asia and globally. We conduct cutting-edge research on topics that include ecology geohazards climate change sea-level rise environmental sustainability conservation of environment and biodiversity and interactions between environment and society. For more information on ASE please visit Yanyan Cheng research group is seeking a Research Fellow. This position is part of a Singapore MOE funded research project hosted by ASE. The Research Fellow will help advance research in Earth system modeling and understand interactions among land water carbon energy atmosphere ecosystems and human systems.

This is a one-year appointment and potentially renewable based on performance and funding availability.

Key responsibilities:

  • Collect validate and harmonize field and remote sensing datasets for model validation.

  • Develop new functionalities in the Community Land Model (CLM) within CESM.

  • Conduct model simulations to investigate how the tropical atmosphere responds to changes in land surface properties and the associated landatmosphere feedback.

  • Participate in mentoring RAs and students at ASE.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in atmospheric science and ecology.

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in model development and the design of numerical experiments development of novel convection schemes (e.g. Develop new functions for both deep and shallow convection schemes and improve model performance in simulations of tropical weather and climate) evaluation of simulation results (e.g. TC MJO and precipitation patterns land-atmospheric interactions) analysis of the mechanisms behind model improvements and paleoclimate simulations and climate projections.

  • Should be familiar with CESM WRF SPEAR CM1 and theoretical atmospheric models as well as the land modules within CESM SPEAR and WRF.

  • Should be familiar with tropical climate and environmental studies.

  • Should have advanced programming skills in Fortran as well as proficiency in other programming languages such as Python NCL and MATLAB.

  • Should have proficiency in scientific computing high-performance computing (HPC) and scripting (e.g. Bash CDO/NCO).

  • Should have strong quantitative and analytical skills in working with climate model datasets and observational datasets.

  • As the position requires stakeholder engagement in English candidate should have good written and oral communication skills in English

  • Candidate should have published scientific papers in high-quality research journals.

  • Should be enthusiastic in research and have good spirit in teamwork and collaboration
