The Controls Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of automated and electrical control systems. This role involves installing configuring maintaining and repairing control equipment and instrumentation. A strong understanding of electrical circuits control logic instrumentation and automation processes is essential. The technician works closely with engineers maintenance teams operators and vendors to support safety productivity and continuous improvement. An associate degree in engineering electronics or a related technical fieldor equivalent experienceis required. This position typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install configure calibrate and test control systems including PLCs HMIs sensors actuators and related devices.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics control drawings and technical documentation.
- Troubleshoot diagnose and repair control panels wiring and field devices to minimize downtime.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automated equipment and control systems.
- Program and modify PLCs HMIs VFDs and automation software per project requirements.
- Assist in the design and implementation of new automation projects and system modifications.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers on system upgrades and process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with safety codes standards and company policies.
- Train operators and maintenance personnel on control systems and provide technical support.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide after-hours support as needed.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in automation and controls.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology Automation Industrial Maintenance or related field; or equivalent experience.
- Preferred certifications in PLC programming or industrial controls (e.g. Siemens Allen-Bradley).
- 2-5 years experience with control systems in industrial or commercial settings.
- Strong knowledge of PLCs HMIs VFDs sensors and instrumentation.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documents.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting automation platforms (e.g. Rockwell Siemens Schneider Electric).
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP Modbus Profibus etc.).
- Proficient with diagnostic tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
- Basic networking knowledge related to industrial control systems.
- Strong analytical problem-solving organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
- Physical ability to climb ladders lift up to 50 lbs and work in various environments.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours including occasional nights and weekends.
