Position Description



The Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library seeks an Associate Law Librarian to deliver senior-level services that advance the Hainsworth Law Librarys mission of providing equitable open and effective access to legal information for all patrons. This position provides high-level legal reference support leads initiatives across core service areas and helps strengthen the overall patron experience. Serving as a lead contributor to cross-functional committee work the Associate Law Librarian guides planning assessment and continuous improvement efforts that keep resources current and accessible expand public legal literacy through outreach and education ensure communications are clear and mission-aligned and apply user-centered and technology-informed approaches to enhance service delivery.

Under the direction and supervision of the Law Library Director and Deputy Director the Associate Law Librarian also carries out administrative functions as delegated. The Associate Law Librarian works with the Director to recommend policies and procedures for the Law Library and provides advice on matters relating to the operation of the Law Library. The Associate Law Librarian works with minimal supervision. The position offers the Associate Law Librarian significant latitude for the use of independent judgment and initiative.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Associate Law Librarians support all library services including the Copy Center as needed:
  • Assists patrons with copying scanning faxing and other office-related tasks.
  • Follows cash handling and reporting procedures as necessary.
  • Enforces Law Library rules and drafts and submits violation reports as necessary.
  • Contributes to the overall organization of the Law Library as needed by following relevant opening and closing procedures reshelving and updating materials and generally maintaining the neat appearance of the Law Library.
  • Develop a professional development plan that encompasses at least 20 hours per year of professional development course work or other learning opportunities.
  • Assists patrons with Harris County Public Library collection at the Law Library including registering new cards helping with check in/out and holds and processing public library materials.
  • Performs other functions and job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree (in any field) from an accredited college or university plus
  • Five (5) years of experience in a public or private law library setting.
OR
  • A Master of Library Science degree or Master of Library and Information Science degreefrom an accredited college or university plus
  • Three (3) years of experience in a public or private law library setting.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate strong customer service orientation and a commitment to law librarianship through a combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent legal research and reference skills.

  • Excellent analytical organizational and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Strong people skills in interacting both with patrons and staff are essential.

  • Project management experience or abilities desired.

  • Knowledge of and experience with Texas legal research materials and self-help legal research resources.

Preferences

  • Knowledge of HTML web-scripting languages content management systems and IT systems and applications preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Express integrated library system preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities particularly English/Spanish desired.

General Information

Located in downtown Houston the Harris County Attorneys Office represents Harris County government the Harris County Flood Control District the Harris County Toll Road Authority and the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network in all civil matters including lawsuits. The office also provides legal advice to county officials and employees.


Position Type Typical Work Schedule & Working Environment:

  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday with occasional additional hours as necessary.

  • This position requires employees to work a 40-hour schedule from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and be able to work any shift between those hours.

  • This job typically operates in a public Law Library environment and the person in this role uses standard office equipment such as computers printers scanners/copiers and phones.


Physical and Mental Demands:

  • This role requires standing for prolonged periods exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects including the human body repetitive motions requiring dexterity such as keyboarding that may include the wrists hands and/or fingers communicating with others to exchange concepts and information problem-solving decision-making organization the ability to read/write and the ability to manage workplace stressors such as adversarial interactions.

Compensation:

  • The base compensation for this position will be determined on the candidates qualifications and the pay of other employees in the job function. Total compensation includes attractive paid leave programs health benefits and retirement plans.

  • In addition the position is eligible for the accrual of compensatory time off for hours worked over 40 in a workweek consistent with Harris County personnel policies and procedures.
