The Villum Foundation has launched a record-breaking research grant of 1 billion DKK over the next ten years with the goal to advance efforts towards a more sustainable built environment. The announced position is part of this venture (CEBE) and the successful candidate will participate in the joint effort to achieve this goal.
A 5 year - long tenure track position within Department of the Built Environment is open in the field of sufficiency in the built environment. This is a fulltime position starting August 2026 and is a five-year position as an assistant professor leading towards a permanent position as an associate professor. The position is with the departments research group Sustainable Cities and Everyday Life located at the university campus in Copenhagen. Sufficiency measures in the built environment include reducing the need for space and the need of conditioning of spaces without compromising health and wellbeing. An anthropological approach to home and sufficiency within the built environment is needed which can supplement the technical understandings of healthy and efficient buildings.
Your work tasks
We seek an anthropological candidate with knowledge and understanding of the interdisciplinary field of the built environment including both anthropological understandings of the meaning of home and anthropological understandings of how technical professionals within the building sector work. Your research is expected to bridge these two fields in the study of the implications of sufficiency within the built environment and how it can be promoted.
The candidate is expected to work together with other researchers related to this centre including making co-design approaches with technical researchers on their approaches to sufficiency. The affiliation with the Villum Foundation initiative also includes participation in relevant seminars conferences activities and the overall contribution to the realization of the Villum initiatives long-term research goals.
The position includes teaching and you are expected to follow the University Pedagogy Program including teaching BSc and MSc students and co-supervising PhD students. Teaching will mainly be within the engineering educations contributing to the interdisciplinary social sciences parts of these programs. BSc and MSc programs are based on AAUs problem-based learning model.

Assessment in connection with transfer to associate professorship
The assessment in connection with transition to tenure as an associate professor normally takes place in the final six months of the tenure track assistant professors employment. However the employee may request that an assessment take place at an earlier time in the first four years. If this assessment finds that the employee is not academically qualified they may request another assessment within the final six months of their period of employment. A maximum of two assessments may take place.
The assessment on transition to the associate professorship will as a minimum emphasize the following qualifications in relation to the scientific subject area of the tenure track assistant professorship:
If the tenure track assistant professor fails to request that their qualifications be assessed in the last year of their period of employment or if they are assessed as not academically qualified the university must immediately initiate dismissal proceedings in accordance with the collective agreement rules.
