Job Summary

Definition

Definition: Under general supervision from the Behavioral Health Medical Director provides preventive diagnostic and therapeutic health care services to members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) in both an Ambulatory and Inpatient Setting. This position is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks knowledge abilities skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Examples of Tasks

1.Direct and Indirect Psychiatric and Medical Care: Provides psychiatric/medical evaluations and treatment for patients of all ages presenting with symptoms of mental illness and physical health medical needs.

  • Provides on-going direct primary/psychiatric care at various community sites to patients of all ages abiding by the highest standards in clinical treatment to patients and their families.

  • Determines diagnoses develops care plans and prescribes medications as allowable.

  • Carefully documents history all findings treatments and education provided in accordance with current medical practice standards and HIPPAA.


2. Has an expanded scope of practice within the primary/psychiatric specialty that includes assessing patients synthesizing and analyzing data and understanding and applying principles of health care at an advanced level.

  • Managing the physical and psychiatric health status of patients

  • Analyzing multiple sources of data identifying alternative possibilities as to the nature of a health care problem and selecting implementing and evaluating appropriate treatment.

  • Making independent decisions in solving complex patient care problems.

  • Monitors patient treatment progress through regular medication reviews.

  • Consults with other providers and traditional providers to ensure continuity of care and best possible patient outcomes.


3. Interprets results of laboratory x-ray and other tests.

  • Diagnoses and treats illnesses within current professional standards for Nurse Practitioners conferring with primary care Physicians and specialists as needed.

  • Initiates actions for further tests and procedures as needed.


4. Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings to recognize various stages of serious physical emotional or mental problems.

  • Observes appropriate medical practices applied to stabilize chronically ill persons.

  • Adjusts treatment within established standards of practice.

  • Refers difficult or complicated cases to physicians or other health care providers as appropriate.

  • Confers with and informs primary care physicians and specialists as needed to provide quality patient care.


5. Writes prescriptions for medications within Nurse Practitioners scope of practice and as allowed by licensing board.

  • Instructs patients in the proper use of medications and possible side effects.

  • Monitors medication administration for reactions and side effects in accordance with pharmaceutical information and medical history.


6. Provides education to patients concerning their illnesses ways to maintain and/or improve their health and researches responses to questions from patients.


7. Is able to identify an emergency medical situation and activates the Emergency Response system in a timely manner.


8. Maintains records and reports on patients program activities and status and other required information for use in program operation quality assurance and other purposes.

  • May delegate appropriate components of nursing regimen and clerical regimen to allied personnel to improve clinic operation.


9. Maintains knowledge and proficiency in medical practices through continuing education.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and staff in-service education.

  • Participates in and conducts studies relevant to health care needs of patients.

  • May serve in a teaching capacity in the development of other health care workers.


10. Plans and participates with other professionals and agencies involved in providing services to families and where appropriate coordinates health care and services required to include immunization and disease contact environmental health and health education.


11. Administrative Duties: Stays up-to-date on current and emerging issues technologies and research in the areas of mental health and substance abuse that affect the SRPMIC.

  • Obtains Continuing Medical Education credits (CMEs) required for Arizona licensure and Board certification.
  • Ensures accurate and timely data entry of patient information in the patient electronic medical record.

  • Maintains an active DEA registration and medical licensure.

  • Prepares and submits reports as required.


12. Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Director of Psychiatry Assistant HHS Director or HHS Director.

  • Knowledge of specialized psychiatric clinical care practices for adults and children.
  • Knowledge of ASAM Recovery Management Principles and Medication Assisted Treatment.
  • Knowledge of Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Care (Psychiatric and Substance Use).
  • Knowledge of disease processes and co-morbidities common in Indian communities.
  • Knowledge of chemical dependency issues in America Indian families adults and children.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues in Indian families adults and children.
  • Knowledge of Type II diabetes and its interaction with substance abuse and mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology statistics and research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of public health problems and practices.
  • Knowledge of health benefits and health care coverage.
  • Knowledge of the Indian Health Service and all other sources of care for American Indians.
  • Knowledge of health education methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles of patient-centered and family-centered care.
  • Knowledge of resources within and outside the Community.
  • Knowledge of history and culture of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Tribal Laws rules customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging pharmaceutical therapies.
  • Knowledge of emerging psychiatric and mental health care therapies.
  • Skill working with Native American patients and families.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with health care providers resource agencies Tribal officials staff patients families and members of the Community.
  • Skill identifying health care systems issues especially in the area of mental health and substance abuse.
  • Skill developing policies and procedures.
  • Skill in diagnosis.
  • Skill in applying varied interventions with individuals/families in crisis
  • Skill working within various community settings including community ambulatory clinics other satellite community health care settings and corrections facilities.
  • Skill presenting findings in court.

  • Ability to work within a community setting utilizing all resources.
  • Ability to plan for the short and long-term.
  • Ability to work effectively with health care providers resource agencies Tribal officials staff (professional and paraprofessional) patients families and members of the Community.
  • Ability to provide psychiatric and mental health care within scope of practice and license.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • A Bachelors degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university (a National League of Nursing NLN or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education CCNE accredited institution) and current registration as a professional Nurse Practitioner in the State of Arizona.
  • A Masters degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university and current registration as a professional Nurse Practitioner in the State of Arizona with content in psychiatric and primary care and mental health program of studies for Nurse Practitioner is highly preferred.
  • Must maintain current certification and/or licensure appropriate to Psychiatric and Primary Care Health Nurse Practitioner including national certification (ANCC or AANP) and pursue a minimum of 10 hours annually of related continuing education credits.
  • Prescription privileges certificate from the State of Arizona registered independent DEA member required.

Experience:
  • Two (2) or more years of experience as registered professional Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner required.
  • Prefer knowledge of Pima and Maricopa language.
Equivalency:
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.

Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill.

Special Requirements

Special Requirements:

  • May be required to work beyond normal business hours including nights weekends and holidays.
  • Incumbent work schedule consists of irregular hours including some evenings and weekends during a 40-hour workweek schedule.
