Are you a highly motivated law studenteager to gain real-world legalexperience this summer The City of Auburn Legal Departmentis looking for a passionate Rule 9 Intern to join our dynamic team! This is your chance to work alongside experienced attorneys step inside the courtroom and immerse yourself in the vast breadth of municipal law.

As a Rule 9 Intern youll ultimately report to the City Attorney but on a daily basis will work directly with the Deputy City Attorney inthe Civil Division and the Chief Prosecutor in the Criminal Division gaining valuable insight into the role of a City Attorney. Expecthands-on exposure to legal decision making and interactions with all levels of City staff.

Primary Duties

Your primary duties in this role will include:

  • Reviewing drafting and analyzing contracts to ensure compliance and accuracy
  • Conducting in-depth legal research on civil matters to support ongoing cases and policy decisions
  • Preparing for and appearing in court on the arraignment review and infraction calendars
  • Drafting legal correspondence and memoranda offering legal advice in coordination with your supervisor
  • Providing case updates and communicating directly with clients strengthening your legal communication
  • Observing court proceedings and hearings gaining first-hand exposure to legal processes
  • Assisting with policy development and legal strategy discussions
  • Tackling additional projects and assignments as determined by the departments needs- each day offers a new challenge and learning opportunity!

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for a Rule 9 internship you must meet the qualifications as outlines for a Licensed Legal Intern. Additional rules can be found here.

We are looking for students who:
  • Will have completed two (2) years of law school by their start date
  • Possess strong legal research and writing skills
  • Can demonstrate ability to work well with others in a high-volume setting

We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program from June 16th-August 22nd. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.

Our core business hours are Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm with an hour lunch. We are physically in the office every day and you will have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.

Additional Information

The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:

Postgraduates: Step 3 - $23.15
