Job Summary
Youth Initiative for Climate Action-Sierra Leone (YICA-SL) is a youth-led non-profit organization dedicated to addressing climate change and environmental issues through policy advocacy capacity building and community organizing. We envision a sustainable and resilient future where young people are actively engaged in climate action and community development.
Tasks
The Finance Officer will be responsible for the financial integrity and transparency of the organization. This role ensures that all funds supporting programs like climate education workshops and youth-led adaptation projects are managed efficiently and in accordance with YICAs financial policies national regulations and donor requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Accounting & Management
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for all organizational activities.
- Process payments for operational costs including logistics for YICA activities like tree planting campaigns and school outreach.
- Manage payroll and oversee the disbursement of funds for youth-led projects in renewable energy and waste management.
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations and manage petty cash for the office.
Budgeting & Grant Compliance
- Assist the Programmes and Operations Manager in developing annual and project-specific budgets.
- Monitor project spending to ensure alignment with the organizations mission and objectives.
- Prepare detailed financial reports for governmental agencies non-governmental partners and international donors.
Compliance Audit & Strategy
- Ensure all financial activities comply with Sierra Leonean laws and non-profit regulations.
- Facilitate internal and external audits to maintain YICA-SLs reputation for accountability.
- Provide financial analysis to support future plans such as launching a mentorship program for youth climate leaders and expanding reach to more schools.
- Maintain a rigorous filing system for all financial documentation including contracts and grant agreements.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or a related field.
- Experience in financial management preferably within the NGO or youth-led sector.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong reporting skills and the ability to explain financial data to non-finance staff.
- A deep passion for climate action and environmental sustainability in Sierra Leone.
