Job Summary

Salary/Position Classification

Purpose of Position

This is a part-time non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

The Department of Public Safetys mission is to provide a safe and effective living learning and working environment for the students faculty staff and visitors of the University of North Dakota. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learn and assist with day-to-day environmental compliance activities including hazardous waste handling chemical inventories and waste tracking under staff supervision.
  • Observe and support compliance efforts related to federal state and local environmental regulations including EPA and North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) requirements.
  • Participate in environmental inspections of laboratories storage areas and facilities as a supervised learning experience assisting with documentation and follow-up actions.
  • Learn proper data collection and recordkeeping practices by assisting with environmental permits manifests and compliance documentation.
  • Support environmental compliance projects by assisting with research data entry and report preparation.
  • Assist with chemical management activities including inventory updates and waste determinations while developing regulatory understanding.
  • Observe spill response planning and assist with incident documentation when appropriate. Contribute to the development and updating of training materials guidance documents and outreach resources.
  • Engage with Facilities Management laboratories and other campus partners to gain exposure to campus operations and compliance coordination. - (Essential)
  • Gain practical experience with environmental compliance programs in a higher education setting.
  • Develop an understanding of environmental regulations applicable to universities and research institutions.
  • Learn how environmental policies and procedures are implemented across campus operations.
  • Build professional skills in communication documentation and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Requirements

  • Coursework or experience related to environmental regulations or hazardous materials.
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in environmental science environmental engineering chemistry occupational safety or a related field.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule during the academic term or summer session.
  • Interest in working in a higher education or research environment.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in environmental compliance environmental science or environmental health and safety.
  • Basic understanding of environmental science or regulatory concepts (coursework acceptable).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow procedures maintain accurate records and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word Excel Outlook).
