We are looking for an Environmental Studies/Computer Engineering student to join the ATCO Projects & Construction team. Work term starts inMay2026for8 or12-monthperiod in Edmonton.

As aLand Planner Co-op studentyoullbring your knowledge of land use planning and environmental regulations to help us responsibly plan route and develop our transmission and distribution infrastructure. Reporting to a Supervisor in the Lands& Environmentdepartmentyoullguide projects from the early planning stages through consultation and regulatory approval ensuring environmental stewardship and strong relationships with the people and groupsimpactedby our work.

This position includes assisting and providing advice to internal and external stakeholders regarding regulatory applications and permits required for new projects decommissioning projects line mitigation and capital maintenance projects.

Who you are:

  • Mustbe enrolled in aco-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.

  • Working towards a bachelors degree in environmental sciences Land Use Planning Biology Soil Sciences or a related field such as Forestry Agriculture or Environmental Engineering.

  • Or working towards a Computer Software degree with knowledge of SharePoint site management

  • The ability to review and understand project work scope execution strategies constructionactivitiesand environmental impacts associated with electrical infrastructure development

  • Knowledge of planning land-useand environmental principles normallyacquiredthrough a degree in planning or in an environmental field

  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant legislation at Municipal Provincial and Federal levels

  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively with both internal teams and external communities.

  • Familiarity with GIS software (ESRI ArcGIS Pro etc.) and spatial data analysis.

  • Experience working with data sources like FWMIS Landscape Analysis Tool (LAT) AbaData SPIN II and GLIMPS.

  • Experience with online permitting tools like RPATH OPAC and DRAS.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and platforms like Microsoft Project Teams and Power BI.

  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers License.

What you will do:

  • Identify potential planning and environmental risks during project scoping and assist with schedule and budget forecasting.

  • Complete desktop and field-level assessments to flag sensitive environmental and land-use features.

  • Analyze spatial and project data to assess constraints and opportunities factoring in environmental technical social and economic considerations.

  • Work with consultants and contractors to ensure planning routing and environmental studies are completed to required standards on time and on budget.

  • Help coordinate consultations and communications with landowners local communities Indigenous groups government agencies and other external parties.

  • Prepare project notification materials and regulatory applications liaising with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas the Alberta Utilities Commission and others as needed.

  • Proactively work with internal teams including land engineering construction and operations to develop mitigation strategies for concerns raised by external groups.

  • Stay current with evolving regulatory and industry trends ensuring compliance and supporting the continuous improvement of ATCOs environmental and planning practices.

  • Support project field visits contractor orientations training and reporting related to land and environmental compliance.

  • Review and digitization of historical (hard copy) environmental assessments surveys and permits

  • Assist with SharePoint site management project tracking and the standardization of templates
