The CNN Growth team is hiring a Software Engineering Manager to help build and grow the next generation of direct to consumer capabilities at CNN. This is an opportunity to lead a newly forming team focused on building foundational systems and user experiences that support audience growth engagement and monetization across platforms.

This role is well suited for a people first engineering leader who enjoys building teams staying close to execution and partnering with product design data and external vendors to deliver high quality consumer facing experiences at scale.

What you will do

As a Software Engineering Manager you will lead a small team of engineers and remain closely involved in day to day execution and delivery. You will own team health delivery and technical quality while partnering with peers and senior leaders on broader technical strategy and alignment.

You will coach engineers through career growth feedback and mentorship while also working closely with cross functional stakeholders and external vendors. You will help guide build vs buy decisions evaluate third party solutions and ensure vendor integrations meet CNNs quality security and performance expectations.

In a globally distributed environment you will model strong communication empathy and accountability and help create a collaborative and inclusive team culture.

The daily

  • Lead mentor and manage a small team of software engineers fostering a collaborative and high performing environment
  • Stay hands on with day to day execution and delivery while supporting engineers through coaching and feedback
  • Facilitate team ceremonies including standups planning and retrospectives
  • Partner with product design data and other engineering teams on discovery planning and delivery
  • Partner with peers and senior leaders on broader technical strategy alignment and prioritization
  • Own technical decision making for the team including build vs buy evaluations and vendor selection
  • Work directly with external vendors and third party partners on technical evaluation integration planning delivery and ongoing support
  • Contribute to system design architecture discussions and technical planning
  • Review code and designs and champion best practices across the team
  • Identify risks dependencies and tradeoffs and proactively work to unblock progress
  • Participate in hiring onboarding and team growth efforts
  • Contribute technically when needed through code reviews implementation guidance or hands on development

Our tech stack

Our teams primarily use JavaScript and TypeScript across modern web architectures supported by Node Python and AWS. We value pragmatic technology choices and regularly integrate internal platforms third party services and cloud infrastructure.

Current tools and technologies include JavaScript TypeScript Node Python Svelte Sass AWS services CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code. Experience across this stack is valuable but adaptability and sound engineering judgment are most important.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Direct experience managing and growing engineering team members. 2 years experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with external vendors and third party partners in a production environment
  • Experience evaluating third party solutions and leading build vs buy technical decisions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including with non technical stakeholders
  • Experience hiring onboarding and growing engineering teams
  • Experience building testing and maintaining consumer facing applications
  • Demonstrated success delivering high quality software in an iterative and sustainable way
  • Experience working in Agile development environments
  • Experience collaborating with globally distributed teams
  • Strong understanding of modern web development across client and server technologies
  • Familiarity with AWS services CI/CD tooling and infrastructure best practices
  • Security first mindset with attention to performance scalability and reliability

Nice to have

  • Experience working on identity authentication subscription or commerce related systems
  • Experience integrating third party APIs and services
  • Experience with A/B testing or experimentation platforms
  • Experience with CMS platforms or templating systems
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as Vue or similar
  • Some Python experience

The transaction is expected to close after the separation of Warner Bros.
