Reports to: Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Seasonal Assistant Wildlife Rehabilitator is a member of the PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and works in collaboration with the Wildlife Rehabilitators to guarantee all patients receive high-quality food water shelter and enrichment daily. They ensure all team members feel valued supported and well-trained while acting to fulfill the organizational mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Ensures that cages and facilities are cleaned and maintained daily feeding schedules are adhered to and other animal care needs are met.
  • Assists in fulfilling daily care plans of wildlife patients including but not limited to nutritional and husbandry needs.
  • Assists with examinations and basic diagnostic procedures on incoming patients. Administers basic medical treatments under veterinary direction according to the PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center manual and policies. Maintains animal care records and inputs data.
  • Oversees and assists interns and volunteers with daily duties. Assists with training and mentoring of volunteers and interns. Delegates and ensures satisfactory completion of tasks.
  • Ensures that animals are being handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety. Ensures that protocols to minimize the risk of contraction of zoonotic diseases are being adhered to.
  • Admits animals from the public and assists both in person and over the phone regarding animal rescues transport and nuisance wildlife situations.

Additional Responsibilities include the following:

  • Drives own vehicle or PAWS vehicle as needed to rescue and transport wildlife as directed. Performs animal releases as needed.
  • Basic repairs and maintenance of the facility and animal caging.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of two years of college level education preferred or the equivalent in education and experience with a proven interest in wildlife.

RELATED EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of three months of experience in a wildlife rehabilitation center or related field.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with computer systems preferred.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State drivers license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses and auto insurance with required coverage limits.

  • Ability to work quickly efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions; handle multiple responsibilities; and work cooperatively with co-workers (volunteers interns and staff) and the public.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal organizational written and verbal communication skills and work effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of people and maintain high quality customer relations.

  • 4 10 hour shifts weekly including some weekends evenings and holidays

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Frequently required to stand walk sit bend push reach climb stoop kneel and crouch and other moderately strenuous activities.
  • Daily lifting of a minimum of forty (40) pounds. Lifting heavier weights with the assistance of other staff.
  • This position relays heavily on all senses every day to evaluate patients.
  • Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time including working at a computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round
  • Exposure to noise odors chemical fumes dust animal hair/dander parasites urine feces and transmittable disease due to equipment and animals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

SCOPE OF SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Guides the work of volunteers and interns supporting them as needed.
