Job Summary

The City of Bellevue WA is currently looking for two Part Time Water Maintenance Support specialists for the Utilities Department. Position is limited to a maximum of 28 hours per week. This role has a focus on trimming vegetation around meter boxes fire hydrants as well as general maintenance around above ground water related infrastructure and general support for Water Maintenance as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uses tools and equipment to clear vegetation around meter boxes and fire hydrants.
  • May assist meter readers with difficult access meters to record consumption.
  • Operate City vehicle to deliver door tags for delinquency notifications and scheduled water interruptions.
  • Shutoffand turn on water for non-payment of waterbill.
  • Maintains meter boxes by keeping shrubs around meter boxes trimmed and free of debris; paints mark on street indicating meter location.
  • Assist field crews with recovery efforts after large water main break events and routine preventive maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Works individually and receives only general supervision.
  • Follows well-established procedures for routine functions and reports or refers all difficult or unusual problems to a supervisor

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to locate hard to find meters and have frequent and sometimes difficult contacts with customers regarding water leaks utility bills property damage and problems related to other city utilities.
  • Ability to use good judgement when encountering challenging problems.
  • Ability to work independently on routine jobs in all weather conditions while maintaining a high degree of accuracy on detail-oriented tasks and meeting strict deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively enough to explain the basic facts of a situation or problem to a customer tactfully and clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely operate small tools and equipment like weed eaters and blowers.
  • Ability to operate a desktop computer wrenches shovel shut-off devices and other tools and equipment required for the job.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Eighteen months general work experience with a good work record.
  • Ability to drive safely and navigate throughout the service area.
  • Maintain regular reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license.

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Work is performed almost entirely in the field driving a city owned vehicle.

Definition of a Variable Employee:

  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
    • Note: Employee will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or for 130 hours per month).
This is a union Teamsters Local Union No. 763 position and is located at the Bellevue Service Center.
