This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) a student loan payment reimbursement program. Performs routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures. These exams are achieved by using diagnostic x-ray equipment such as fluoroscopic units general diagnostic units mobile x-ray units and mobile c-arm units. The incumbent will also assist with pain management
procedures.
Employees at this grade level serve as staff DRTs at the full performance level. Candidates at this grade level must be qualified to independently provide services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues.
Functions:
a. Prepares and administers contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as cystogram cholangiogram and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract.
b. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patient staff and self. This is achieved by the use of lead aprons lead gloves lead shields lead-lined walls and collimation. The technicians assure compliance to radiation regulations wearing film badges.
c. Performs direct digital radiography procedures. Operating digitizers in order to provide adequate and proper radiographic images.
d. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Edits and when necessary registers patients in the computerized Radiology Information System (RIS) as well as the work list management portion of the HIS-RIS interface.
e. Properly identifies the patient and the image. This is essential so that mistaken identity does not occur.
f. Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that the patient understands what is to be done and what the risks are.
g. Performs radiographic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic xrays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures.
h. Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas. Incumbent must report equipment malfunctions in a timely manner to the supervisor.
i. Participates in quality assurance and improvement activities in the department. He/she performs regular QA assessments on equipment to assure the highest quality level of exams and maintenance of top performance from the machines.
j. Responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance as stipulated by agencies such as JCAHO IG VHA and local VA facility as well as department policies.
k. Incumbent must be professional cooperative and be able to work alone during the off shifts or when necessary.
l. Participates in on-call for General Radiology Procedures as assigned. This involves coming in to work to replace the scheduled staff technologist when they call in or when short staff. This requires the technician to verbally respond within 15 minutes from receipt of call so that proper and effective care can be given to the patient. On call will be performed on a rotational basis
m. Other duties as assigned.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave 13 days of sick leave 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth adoption or foster care placement of a child.
