Job Summary

Summary

This position is located in the Textile Care Section and assigned to deliver clean and pick up soiled linen from/to the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF) located at the New Mexico VA Health Care System Albuquerque NM to/from the Amarillo VA Health Care System Amarillo TX approximately 560 miles roundtrip and/or any other location to be determined. Driving duties to Amarillo are at minimum 2 days a week. This route will consist of interstate driving.


Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Operate a diesel gas or alternative fuel powered 26000 CVW vehicle with hydraulic lift.
  • Knowledge of local state & federal motor vehicle regulations and national traffic laws.
  • Determine the appropriate weight distribution and safety devices for deliveries.
  • Perform basic pre and post trip vehicle maintenance checks to include but not limited to checking the lubrication and cooling systems for leaks loose hoses battery condition windshield wiper condition general vehicle integrity tire condition and maintaining a clean truck cab at all times.
  • Ensure Infection control measures are maintained between soiled linen and clean textiles are never transported at the same time. Always use proper antiseptic techniques including proper hand hygiene.
  • Clean and disinfect the cargo box after each soiled trip.
  • Complete all log and fuel receipt forms according to VA policy.
  • Read and understand road maps for the purpose of making deliveries.
  • Understand and apply verbal & written instructions pertaining to all phases of textile deliveries.
  • Be a quick learner and follow instructions accurately.
  • Posses general mechanical skills including routing vehicle maintenance checks and identifying problems during operation.
  • Maneuvering vehicles in and around congested loading dock areas.
  • Operate the vehicle in accordance with local state and federal regulations complying with traffic laws Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and VA policies regarding vehicle inspection and safety training requirements.
  • Safely load and off-load linen carts to/from the delivery vehicle.
  • Safely operate the hydraulic lift in the process of loading and unloading linen carts onto and off the vehicle.
  • Work in a safe manner adhering to established safety policies and reporting hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions to management.
  • Cross-train in all techniques and procedures used within the TCPF in the event of staff shortages or unforeseen workload and work under strict time frames & deadlines due to patient workload. Back-up to the Linen clerk Laundry Worker machine Operator and Wash-man duties and must have the basic knowledge and skills to operate washer/extractors dryers ironer etc.
  • Interact with customers; veterans their representatives visitors and all VA staff in a cooperative and professional manner.
  • Assist linen clerks in assembling linens orders and perform other related duties as assigned including Textile processing and distribution.
  • Work unsupervised while delivering excellent service and exercising good judgment in unexpected situations.

Work Schedule: Part Time; 20 hrs/week; Monday and Thursday 1:00am-11:30am

    EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:



    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.     Physical Requirements:
    • Incumbent must possess ability to climb into and out of the vehicle.
    • Position routinely requires that individual operate vehicles electrical equipment and must exert physical effort to load unload and transport by pushing and pulling clean and soiled linen carts in a controlled manner weighing up to 700 pounds in and out of Laundry truck to and from loading docks to various locations within the TCPF medical center and AV AHCS. These carts are equipped with pneumatic type wheels/tires for easy movement.
    • Incumbent will be exposed to repetitive motion of arms wrist and hands and is required to perform simple grasping and fine hand manipulation reaching outward and above the shoulder lift soiled linen bags up and onto soiled linen carts and frequent stooping bending twisting and kneeling standing walking and sitting.
    • Incumbent must be able to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to stand and walk consistently perform light to moderate bending and stooping and able to wear PPE for extended period of time as dictated by the work setting.
    • Incumbent must be able to drive for up to 10 hours at a time.
    Working Conditions:
    • Incumbent will work a compressed tour of duty 10 hours per day.
    • Work is performed both inside and outside in all weather conditions. The incumbent must be constantly aware of fluctuating weather conditions such as periods of extreme heat in summer rain slick road conditions and snow covered and icy roads and dock facilities in winter.
    • Operates vehicles in all types of traffic conditions and. weather may encounter high winds icy roads and snow.
    • Work is normally performed inside the cab of an air conditioned or heated vehicle.
    • Incumbent is intermittently exposed to excess humidity chemicals solvents fumes dust and noise.
    • Individual is exposed to possible contagions from the handling of contaminated linens in performance of collecting soiled linen. Potential exists for sharps exposure in soiled linen. Incumbent is subject to cuts scrapes bumps bruises slips falls and other injuries and to disagreeable odors in the performance of required duties.
    • This position will be assigned holidays and irregular tours. This position will on occasion be asked to work extended hours for coverage as necessary in support of Veteran Centered Care.
