Job Summary

Description

Job Summary:

  • The PhD Neurophysiologist will support the intraoperative and clinical work of the Functional Neurosurgery team focusing on patients undergoing surgical interventions for epilepsy Parkinsons disease and other neurodegenerative or movement disorders treated through neuromodulation and ablation.
  • This role combines direct support of operating room (OR) procedures with advanced neurophysiological data processing imaging analysis and academic engagement in education and research.
  • The incumbent will work closely with functional neurosurgeons fellows and multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure high-quality electrophysiological mapping target identification and postoperative data analysis to guide patient care and improve surgical precision.
  • Primary duties and responsibilities:
    • Clinical and OR Support: 1. Provide intraoperative neurophysiological support for functional neurosurgery cases (e.g. epilepsy mapping deep brain stimulation for Parkinsons and other movement disorders and neuromodulation procedures).
    • 2. Spend approximately 3-4 days per week in the operating room assisting with trajectory planning brain mapping electrophysiological signal acquisition and real-time electrophysiologic monitoring under the direction of the attending surgeons.
    • 3. Process and analyze neuroimaging data including co-registration bias correction atlas segmentation tractography lead localization and stereotactic EEG scene reconstructions.
    • 4. Generate comprehensive trajectory plans and lead map visualizations to support surgical planning and postoperative review.
    • 5. Demonstrate a deep understanding of neuroanatomy and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinsons Essential Tremor Dystonia Epilepsy) and apply this knowledge to identify and justify targets for stimulation or ablation using evidence-based rationale.
    • 6. Collaborate with the functional neurosurgery teams to use and maintain stereotactic frame and related systems to perform accurate electrode placement.
    • 7. Perform intraoperative frame localization to transform pre-operative planned trajectories into frame coordinates for the functional neurosurgery teams
    • 8. Master and manage all hardware and software platforms used for intraoperative navigation and data analysis (e.g. StealthStation O-arm ROSA robotic targeting platform BrainLab AlphaOmega FSL MATLAB and related mapping or neuroimaging systems).
    • 9. Maintain compliance with institutional and regulatory standards for intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring and data handling.
  • Education and Training:
    • 1. Participate in the education and mentorship of neurosurgery fellows residents and trainees in the Neurosurgical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program.
    • 2. Develop and maintain structured training materials competency assessments and orientation content for new fellows and technical staff.
    • 3. Support continuing education initiatives for faculty and trainees regarding neurophysiology techniques data interpretation and technological advancements.
  • Research and Academic Engagement:
    • 1. Collaborate with faculty and trainees to support translational and clinical research related to neuromodulation electrophysiology and brain mapping.
    • 2. Contribute to protocol development data collection and manuscript preparation for academic publications and conference presentations.
    • 3. Maintain familiarity with current literature techniques and emerging technologies in functional neurophysiology and neuromodulation.
  • Additional Duties as Assigned.
  • Travel: Less than 10% of the time may be required.
  • Work Type: On-Site employee - Employee will be required to be on-site

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education: PhD in Neurophysiology Neuroscience Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field. Completion of postdoctoral training in neurophysiology systems neuroscience or neural engineering.
  • Experience:Demonstrated expertise in electrophysiological data acquisition analysis and interpretation. Experience in supporting functional neurosurgery cases in the OR
  • Knowledge skills and abilities (required): - Excellent interpersonal communication and teaching skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.

Preferred Qualifications Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years with strong background in neuroanatomy neuroimaging and functional mapping.
  • Experience working directly in an OR setting alongside functional neurosurgeons.
  • Clinical fellowship experience centered around end-to-end neurophysiology support for DBS cases (e.g. preoperative trajectory planning and atlas segmentation intraoperative frame localization and co-registration)
  • Certification: Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) provided by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET)
  • Knowledge skills and ability requirements (preferred): -Proficiency with relevant software (e.g. MATLAB Python FSL SPM BrainLab Stealth or equivalent). Demonstrated expertise in electrophysiological data acquisition analysis and interpretation. Should have experience supporting >100 cases. Familiarity with regulatory compliance related to human subjects research and clinical data security (e.g. HIPAA IRB). Record of scholarly publications or contributions to the field of clinical or systems neurophysiology. Prior experience in intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring or neural interface research preferred.
