The primary purpose of this position is to perform the full range of journey level plumbing duties such as installing repairing and modifying water supply sewage disposal gas distribution oil lines and similar utility systems and equipment.


Duties

  1. Independently installs modifies repairs and maintains a variety of new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage water oil and gas distribution systems and water closets tubs backflow prevention devices/assemblies water meters and showers.
  2. Plans and accomplishes work from initial layout to final assembly which involves interpreting and applying building plans specifications blueprints sketches and other plumbing guides/codes and using shop mathematics.
  3. Troubleshoots/tests various plumbing systems and equipment including backflow prevention devices such as reduced pressure principal devices double check devices atmospheric vacuum breakers water meters and other cross connection devices.
  4. Uses and maintains tools such as tapes rules plumb bobs hand and power pipe threaders cutters pipe wrenches angle drills hacksaws and power saws power sewer cleaning equipment various gas detectors and meters and lead pots.
  5. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • A Journeyman Plumbers License is required IAW UFCand the Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 142 Section 3.
  • As required may train and/or guide other personnel in performance of plumbing duties.
  • The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are: The plumber makes repairs and installations from ladders scaffolding and platforms and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places.
  • This requires the employee to stand stoop bend kneel climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • The plumber frequently lifts carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance.
  • Must possess a Massachusetts Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification.
  • Must possess a Massachusetts Cross Connection Surveyor Certification.
  • Employee will be required to support Special Events (i.e. Annual Air Show Base Exercises) not necessarily performing in their primary skill code.
  • Employee will be required to support Base Readiness and Emergency Operations Exercises and Real-World Threats and Events. The work will require the employee to carry an electronic beeper or cell phone.

Qualifications

In order to qualify you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4200 Plumbing And Pipefitting Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
