The primary purpose of this position is to make and repair high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture.
- Makes or repairs high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry with intricate precise and fancy features and details such as curved and contoured surfaces marquetry book-matched panels scrollwork friezes inlays and complex joints.
- Plans and lays out complete sequence of work.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
- Sets up and operates tools and equipment such as power shapers mortisers tenoners jointers routers lathes and various other woodworking tools accessories as well as common hand and power tools to do the work.
In order to qualify you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4600 WOOD WORK Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Wood Crafter without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge skills abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of and skill in wood crafting methods and techniques to make and repair a variety of wooden items with unique and intricate shapes and designs such as furniture cabinets and decorative woodwork.
2. Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of a wide variety of hardwoods softwoods plywoods veneers wood substitutes gluing and bonding agents and other woodworking materials.
3. Knowledge of arithmetic to compute check and ensure consistency of dimensions on interlocking parts.
4. Knowledge of safety regulations practices and procedures. Ability to make jigs templates and fixtures to extend and/or adapt machines for different purposes.
5. Skill in laminating veneering plastic overlaying steam bending and grain matching. Skill in interpreting complex instructions sketches blueprints and specifications.
6. Skill in setting up operating and maintaining precision wood crafting machines and woodworking hand and power tools to perform machining scrolling cutting turning and decorating.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. The work requires frequent standing bending stooping crouching and arm movement and is sometimes performed in cramped areas on temporary platforms and overhead. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds and occasionally lifts heavier items with assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works in woodworking machine shop areas or other enclosed areas which are sometimes unheated. Frequently is exposed to eye skin nose and lung irritations from glue bonding chemicals vapors splinters and sawdust. Is also frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries such as loss of fingers from accidents while operating woodworking machines. To minimize or eliminate the effects of some of these conditions the employee follows numerous safety practices and wears or uses various protective devices such as hard hats safety glasses face shields and face masks protective ear devices safety shoes gloves and respirators. These devices may be uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods of time as the environment and job dictate.
