The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for an Assistant Nurse Manager who will function as the Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) within Acute Clinical Hospital Service (Float Pool).
The Nursing Officer of the Day manages and guides all levels of nursing staff (RNs LPNs NAs and NA Intermittent Float Pool) as these staff members provide primary and psychiatric care to veterans. The NOD is a resource to Charge Nurses and staff in decision-making and emergent care of patients throughout the Medical Center.
The Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) is responsible for ensuring that resources (staff and/or equipment) are procured when needed and utilized appropriately and effectively in the delivery of patient care needs. He/she assures appropriate follow up and management of patient issues care or personnel issues and compliance with administrative and clinical policies. The NOD assures that staff participates in training sessions that occur on the off-tours of duty. He/she is responsible for appropriately guiding and counseling staff and the PODs or MODs. The NOD participates in Nursing Service and Medical Center Committees as assigned and performs all Quality Management assignments in a timely manner (including data collection aggregation and analysis) and forwards to the service and/or Medical Center Committees. The NOD is familiar with and practices appropriate procedures associated with reusable medical devices and ensures staff are also in compliance. The NOD is familiar with InterQual criteria and completes prospective reviews on admissions during the off tours. The NOD is responsible to utilize Acustaf scheduling program for managing all call-ins throughout the organization to assure appropriate staffing levels which impact safety and quality. The NOD responds to psychiatric emergencies and other emergency situations. The NOD has delegated authority for the Associate Director Patient Care / Nursing Services for nursing decisions regarding workload assignment of staff management of clinical administrative personnel issues during non-administrative hours. The NOD provides coaching and counselling to the nursing staff to resolve problems both with conduct or clinical issues. The NOD is responsible to evaluate staffing needs and approve overtime or leave accordingly. Executes position responsibilities that demonstrates leadership experience and creative approaches to management of complex patient care.
The NOD registered nurse demonstrates:
(a) Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice including access to care and discharge planning
(b) Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning decision-making and evaluating outcomes
(c) Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities
(d) Systematically evaluating current practice and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise
(e) Guiding developing and supporting staff from a leadership perspective

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a masters level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelors level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005 Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing possession of a current full active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
