Job Summary:

The Department of Radiology is seeking a Data Scientist who will help lead data management for the research program. This Data Scientist will work within a core group of researchers and staff to manage the collection and curation of high-quality clinical data to inform and improve breast cancer screening treatment and outcomes. This position will report directly to the Director.

The Wisconsin Imaging-based Screening and Cancer Research (WISCR) Network is a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and community radiology practices throughout Wisconsin to aggregate de-identified breast imaging data with the goal of improving population-based screening outcomes. WISCR provides a resource for big data research including the use of artificial intelligence in screening that will influence regional and national cancer screening policies and practices.

This position will provide data management and basic data analysis to support research operations scientific grants and publications. The Data Scientist is expected to develop a deep understanding of the data compiled in the registry and be responsible for mapping multi-level data to research data dictionaries. The successful candidate will have or rapidly acquire an understanding of breast cancer screening data be versed in SAS and SQL and have a solid understanding of data informatics.

Additional Job Details:

  • This position may require some work to be performed in-person onsite at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely at an offsite non-campus work location.

  • Multiple Titles: Data Scientist I Data Scientist II or Data Scientist III. Applicants for this position will be considered for the titles listed in this posting. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators
  • Documents approaches to address research questions
  • Implements appropriate data science techniques under the guidance of other data scientists statisticians and/or other researchers to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization statistical analysis machine learning and data mining
  • Assists in basic project management tasks including IRB and DUA applications

  • Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance transformations restructuring and integration of multiple data sources
  • Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $65000 annually; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with managing large clinical datasets including extracting and curating data from Epic or similar electronic medical records.

  • Experience with imaging-related data management including curation of large imaging datasets for research purposes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in data management and statistical analysis applications including SQL and SAS.

  • Experience with managing project IRB applications and data use agreements with external research partners.

Education:

MS Degree Preferred; focus in biomedical informatics data management or related field preferred.
