Position Overview
The Farm Specialist Intern will help operate Exact Sciences onsite hydroponic farms.

Operation includes seeding transplanting and harvesting as well as cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure proper and safe food handling and growing in the farm.

Essential Duties
Include but are not limited to the following:

• Grow inside container hydroponic farms including seeding transplanting harvesting and packaging produce.

• Clean and maintain the hydroponic farm including general farm cleaning refilling water and nutrient tanks and calibrating sensors.

• Test and maintain water quality for growing.

• Maintain a safe working environment.

• Troubleshoot automated nutrient systems when issues arise.

• Assist in retail greens program including inventory management.

• Lead farm tours for onsite employees and fellow interns.

• Plan and support community zero-waste opportunities.

• Uphold campus sustainability initiatives.

• Champion of an effective food safety program.

• Work collaboratively with food service and catering.

• Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

• Ability to maintain a solution-oriented mindset.

• Excellent organizational skills including the ability to organize projects record data and maintain timelines for tracking progress.

• Strong reliable worker with ability to work independently.

• Self-starter who has great attention to detail and a willingness to learn new subjects.

• Ability to work designated schedule.

• Ability to work nights and/or weekends.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.

• Ability to work seated for approximately 20% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 80% of a typical working day.

• Ability to work on a mobile device tablet or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 20% of a typical working day.

• Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.

• Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.

• Ability to use a telephone through a headset.

• Ability to bend at the waist crouch stoop squat and kneel.

• Ability to work in hydroponic farm conditions.

• Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.

• Ability and means to travel between Madison locations.

• Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

• Working towards a bachelors degree in plant science or related field.

• Basic computer skills to include Internet navigation email usage word processing and cloud base application technology.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office.

• Coursework or professional working knowledge of food safety regulations and standards.

• Coursework or professional working knowledge of basic agriculture growing practices particularly around controlled environment agriculture.

• Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

• Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Work experience in a greenhouse or production environment.

• Work experience growing crops either hydroponically and/or traditionally.
