Job Summary

Summary

The position is organizationally located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC)Capitol incumbent is a Laborer (Recycler) Leader and is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to subordinate employees. Sets the pace of work provides instructions and checks and performs a wide variety of laborer and cleaning duties independently. This position is open to current Capitol Building Employees Only.


Duties

This Position is Limited to Current Capitol Building Employees Only.

Tour of Duty: Sunday Night - Friday Morning 10:00PM - 6:30AM

Cleaning of Building Interiors and Exteriors

  • Performs the full range of cleaning duties in an assigned area without instruction.
  • Cleans interior and exterior areas assigned.
  • Performs a variety of custodial duties that involve handling moving and controlling heavy powered equipment and performing minor equipment maintenance.
  • Performs various tasks in maintenance operations including sweeping mopping dusting walls and ceiling surfaces cleaning tiles sandstone marble bronze cement wood emptying waste baskets ash trays recycling.
  • Performs cleaning operation of elevators public rest rooms committee rooms stairwells hallways office suites.
  • Collects sorts and moves large quantities of materials which is consolidated for pickup such as aluminum cans plastic/glass bottles paper from central and desk side locations and newspapers recycled by office staff.

General Labor Tasks

  • Works on ladders and scaffolds to perform tasks such as washing and restoring: window blinds ceiling fixtures walls and changes light bulbs as needed.
  • Performs laborer work including loading and unloading trucks and using various moving equipment and devices including fork lifts hand and power lifts and pallet jacks and carts for construction debris.
  • Assists trade shops to set up scaffolding ladders and carry equipment materials and tools to work site for construction or renovation.
  • Removes construction debris and assists with tarps and moving heavy furniture as needed.
  • In shops and warehouses maintains an assigned area clean and orderly.
  • Sweeps and mops floor.
  • Removes oil hydraulic fluid and other spilled liquids.

Furniture Moves Set-Up and Support for Office Moves Special Events and Special Requests

  • Moves and arranges furniture furnishings and equipment for room assignment changes room space changes and special events.
  • Sets up and/or rearranges committee rooms dining areas outside plazas assembly rooms auditoriums meeting rooms offices etc. for many types of affairs.
  • Performs various work assignments as required by Members of Congress their staff committee staffs and other clients.

Serves as Team/Work Leader

  • Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor and starts work (e.g. by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led).
  • Ensures that needed plans blueprints materials and tools are available and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Checks work in progress and when finished checks for compliance with supervisors instructions on work sequence procedures methods and deadlines.
  • Demonstrates proper work methods and answers workers questions regarding procedures policies written instructions and other directives (e.g. technical orders); obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up during the work.
  • Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work causes of delays and overall work operations and problems (e.g. additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).
  • Assures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (e.g. assures that machine capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used).
  • Performs the same type duties as the employees being led.
  • Works along with other workers setting the pace.

  • You must be able to pass a drug test.

    • A citizen of the United States;

    • A person who is admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157 or is granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. 1158 and has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible;
    • A person who owes allegiance to the United States (nationals of American Samoa Swains Island and the Northern Mariana Islands and nationals who meet other requirements described in 8 U.S.C. 1408); or
    • A person who is currently an officer or employee of the Government of the United States.
