Job Summary

Summary

The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) at the VA GLA or Sepulveda (North Hill CA) HealthCare System Medical Center (VAMC) in the Engineering department. The primary purpose of the position is to repair and modify varieties of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions by recognizing and determining the best method for correcting malfunctions systems.


Duties

  • Modifies and balance various elements of systems designed to meet a variety of conditions.
  • Maintains and repairs all systems which is assigned to the specify unit.
  • Installs recognizes the causes of faulty equipment and repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigerators heating and air conditioning units and any systems.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on systems that operate continuously including: switches refrigeration chillers freezers exhaust fans and equipment that controls the climatic conditions of building such as electric electronic and direct digital controls.
  • Installs and repairs large systems that provide cooling humidifying dehumidifying cleaning filtering and circulation of air as well as reheat for the air handlers to boost temps.
  • Recognizes the causes of faulty equipment and performing complex repairs that may include disassembly and reassembly fitting and overhauling various parts and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots the system identifies defective components determines corrective actions and make repairs to systems including reducing valves steam traps overload elements condensers chilled water and steam heater coils evaporators and chilled water pumps.
  • Reassembles equipment and tests for proper operations using voltmeter ammeter pressure gauges and vacuum pumps.
  • Uses schematics sketches and drawings when installing and repairing equipment.
  • Makes necessary adjustments and settings.
  • Replaces refrigeration and air conditioning gasses to obtain required temperature levels.
  • Must utilize knowledge of and must comply with all OSHA safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner.
  • Fabricates new parts or reconditions old parts when new parts are not available such as shafts holding brackets pulleys and pipefittings by using lathe grinder and other machine tools.
  • Creates and closes work orders daily or as necessary to ensure compliance with The Joint Commission standards as well as to account for labor hours materials etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Physical Requirements: The physical effort expended equates to lifting and moving large pieces of equipment and material maneuvered into and out of confined areas. Hoists holders and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors condensers and chillers. Carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds makes repairs and installations from ladders scaffolding and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Work involves stooping stretching bending and kneeling are frequently for longer periods of time than usual.

    EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge skills and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

    SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:



    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
