Job Summary

Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) a rural college serving vibrant culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a Custodian 1 in the colleges Custodial Services Department. Under general supervision this position performs a variety of custodial and general maintenance duties in and around campus facilities. This position reports to the Custodial Services Supervisor and works Monday through Thursday from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and Friday from 1:00pm to 7:30pm.

Positions in the Custodial Services Department are represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

Essential Job Duties

Primary essential duties and responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:

Perform Various Types of Custodial Duties - 85%
Vacuum carpets sweep mop dust-mop scrub strip wax and polish floors. Clean dry erase boards and trays dust furnishings wash windows spot wash walls wipe tables; vacuum and spot clean upholstered furniture; vacuum and spot clean fixtures. Empty trash and remove from building to waste collection areas remove and collect various recycle material. Clean and disinfect drinking fountains. Clean and disinfect bathrooms toilets sinks touch points and floors; fill in for other custodians as required stock and replenish custodial supplies closets carts; check and report burned out light bulbs to supervisor.

Event/Activity Set-ups - 10%
Set up equipment chairs tables staging etc. for mainly on campus activities along with one off-campus activity (graduation). Moves furniture and equipment; arranges tables and chairs for special events. Move furniture when necessary to deep clean floors.

Snow Removal - 2%
During winter months assist with snow removal just around entrances to buildings - shovel entrances where equipment isnt able to operate and throw deicer down.

Minor Maintenance & Repair Work - 1%
Regular maintenance of deep cleaning equipment when used; rotate shampoo roller change pads on floor equipment. Change batteries in equipment: automated paper towel dispensers automatic toilet flusher clocks etc.

Maintain Inventory Sheets/Misc. - 1%
Check cleaning equipment in and out. Record any materials and/or supplies taken to another building. Allowing for supervisor to order and maintain adequate inventory. As the last occupant in buildings be sure to secure and set alarms.

Work Setting including hazards:
Must have the physical ability to: stand and walk on a consistent basis; lift push pull 0-50 lb; climb ladders bend squat reach; twist hands wrists shoulders waist hips and also the repetitive of the above. Must have good hand dexterity including grasping holding and repetitive movements. Must have good vision clear vision near and far depth perception and field of vision. Must have good communication skills both oral and written; reading skills and good interpersonal relationships. Must be able to follow and receive instructions and receive supervision. Must have good cognitive skills including short and long term memory attention to detail abstract reasoning and decision making. Aptitude for basic math - use of ratios and percentages.


Travel Requirements:
Must be able to travel for specified trainings and drive campus vehicles and equipment around campus which includes a valid driver license and proof of insurance.


Tools and Equipment:
Must have the ability to wear safety equipment which includes chemical protection goggles safety glasses face shields dust masks ear plugs ear muffs hard hats back support belt/brace wrist supports elbow supports knee pads gloves protective clothing rain gear protective foot wear.


Customer Interactions:
Must have the ability to work with others including students staff faculty and the community.


Other:
Must have the physical ability to deal with environmental stresses emergency situations deadlines a variety of duties and working alone. Must be able to work with the following conditions: wet floors dust fumes odors working inside and outside handling chemicals and cleaning agents. Must possess the desire for continual skill and professional development trainings.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

At the time of application all candidates must posses the following:

Required Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent; physical ability to do required work; six months experience in custodial work; and the ability to read and write in English. Must be able to travel for specified trainings and drive campus vehicles and equipment around campus which includes a valid driver license and proof of insurance.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Custodial experience with large institution custodial standards and requirements; self-discipline and self-motivation; ability to work with college staff in a pleasant and productive manner; possess a basic understanding of computer skills particularly word processing and email; and excellent customer service skills.
