The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as an IT Specialist exercising responsibility as Headquarters AFSOC Control and Communications security specialist and Security Control Assessor (SCA). Leads Air Force efforts to secure platforms and SOCOM IT systems against cyber and insider threats.
- Manages AFSOC cybersecurity for all AF Special Operations IT and Special Operations Command Control and Computer weapons systems within AOR.
- Develops policies guidance and technical requirements for completing system cybersecurity risk assessments.
- As a Special Operations Security Control Assessor completes Authorization to Operate and cybersecurity processes required in support of SOCOM and AFSOC Systems in accordance with DOD SOCOM and AF guidance.
- Represents AFSOC at a variety of Cybersecurity forums and exercises. As a SME for AFSOC at OSD DoD JCS Combatant Command and HAF level working groups visits professional symposiums and conferences regarding cybersecurity.

- Position is Centrally Managed by the Cyberspace and Information Technology CFT; DNRP is authorized
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
- Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. The employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
- Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force national security and public safety.
- Information Assurance Certification is a condition of employment. This position includes information assurance (IA) work as a paramount duty requirement.
- Per DoD 8570.01-M the incumbent of this position must achieve the appropriate IA certification within six months of assignment of these duties.
- A waiver of this six month requirement may be granted per DoD 8570.01-M C3.2.4.2 or C3.2.4.3. Failure to receive the proper IA certification will result in removal from this position.
Qualifications
In order to qualify you must meet the requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions Information Technology (IT) Management Series GS-2210 (Alternate A). Must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below: Attention to Detail Customer Service Oral Communication and Problem Solving AND one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-12 (or equivalent in other pay systems) which includes: Proficient in applying a broad range of IT security principles practices technologies and policies including systems software database platforms and storage solutions. Experienced in assessing risk and vulnerability implementing mitigation measures and distributing security tools and procedures. Experienced in authorization and assessment of IT systems incorporating updated security measures and countermeasures based on review findings. Proficient with WAN and LAN security requirements and methods for protecting computer and information systems from cyber threats.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge skills abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Mastery of and skill in applying a full range of IT security principles concepts practices products services and policy (including systems software database software immediate access storage technology) and methods for evaluating risk and vulnerability implementing mitigating improvement and disseminating security tools and procedures.
2. Knowledge of authorization and assessment of IT systems and new or revised security measures and countermeasures based on the results of authorization reviews.
3. Knowledge of WAN and LAN system security requirements and techniques for protecting computer and information systems from cyber threats.
4. Ability to review and assess new systems devices platforms etc. for potential security risks and make sound recommendations in support of the Risk Management Framework process.
5. Ability to research analyze and advise on AF Special Operations aircraft programs missions and requirements in support of unit or staff assignments with an AF or Joint Operations environment in the area of Communications and Information Operations Intelligence or deployment on contingency operations.
6. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing clearly concisely with technical accuracy and negotiate complex issues.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.
