The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water collecting and treating wastewater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEP delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons per day of the highest quality drinking water to 8.5 million NYC residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York and has a wastewater conveyance and treatment system capable of processing over 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day to protect the environment and the citys surrounding waterways.
New York City has approximately 140000 catch basins 114000 hydrants 90000 valves 14 gatehouses 3 reservoirs 68 groundwater wells a 100 million gallon underground storage tank and 7000 miles each of both sanitary sewers and water mains. The responsibility of maintaining these vast networks falls under the Department of Environmental Protections Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO).
Job Description
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and storm water and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The position will fall under jurisdiction of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations which is responsible for the operation and maintenance and protection of New York Citys drinking water distribution and wastewater collection systems the protection of adjacent waterways and natural drainage (wetlands) and the development of the Departments Capital Water and Sewer Infrastructure Program. The Bureau also approves and inspects water and sewer connections performed by licensed plumbers and/or authorized addition BWSO has overall responsibility for the approval and inspection of all public and private construction projects as they relate to the Citys water or sewer systems.
The Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations (BWSO) seeks to hire one motivated Assistant Civil Engineer for the Cross Connection Unit within the Division of Engineering Connections and Permitting. The typical tasks and responsibilities of the staff in the unit are to perform reviews of engineering plans for Cross-Connection or Backflow Prevention Assembly installation on water services. Under supervision the selected candidate will perform engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility including but not be limited to the following:
-Reviews Applications/Plans/ Exemptions for Backflow Prevention (BFP) Assemblies submitted by the professional engineer or registered architect within duly specific period.
-Checks Initial/Annual Test reports for compliance with approved plans within a duly specified time frame and maintain detailed & accurate records of test reports in the database.
-Participates in meeting with the Applicant/Design Engineer regarding BFP Application/Plan requirements. Coordinate professionally with the unit/applicants to assist the units function.
-Develop detailed knowledge of all application and permit procedures related to water connections and BFP installations. Prepares oral and written reports as required.
-Engages in studies investigation or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of the department
-Engage in other reviews and studies associated with water and sewer connections.

Qualifications :
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Masters degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
