To qualify for the GS-5: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Maintaining records to ensure they are accurate and up to date; 2) Using automated systems to perform administrative support functions (i.e. reviewing information for discrepancies maintain databases and preparing reports briefings and correspondence); and 3) Utilizing standard office equipment (i.e. scanners copiers fax machines and office automation systems) to perform a substantial range of office automation support functions.
To qualify for the GS-4: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of general experience demonstrating progressively responsible clerical office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
In lieu of general/specialized experience you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:
GS-5:
Successful completion of at least four full academic years of education above high school
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience
GS-4:
Successful completion of at least two full academic years of education above high school
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience
