Job Summary

Deputy Head of Primary

Start Date: August / September 2026

The Role

We are seeking an experienced reflective and highly capable Deputy Head of Primary to join a strong and forward-thinking primary leadership team. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping high-quality teaching and learning supporting staff development and ensuring excellent outcomes for pupils across the Primary phase.

Working closely with the Head of Primary the Deputy Head will provide day-to-day academic and pastoral leadership contribute to strategic planning and help drive continuous school improvement. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong curriculum knowledge excellent interpersonal skills and a clear commitment to child-centred education.

Founded in the mid-2010s the school is a well-established K12 international school located in a major metropolitan area with a strong academic reputation. The purpose-built campus offers modern teaching facilities extensive green spaces and a wide range of learning and recreational environments.

The school delivers a bilingual internationally oriented curriculum combining the strengths of British and international education with local cultural context. The Primary School serves pupils from Early Years through to Upper Primary with a strong emphasis on wellbeing academic rigour creativity and holistic development.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Support the Head of Primary in the strategic leadership and daily management of the Primary School.
  • Contribute to whole-school development planning self-evaluation and improvement priorities.
  • Act as a professional role model promoting high standards of conduct collaboration and accountability.
  • Lead by example in fostering a positive inclusive and respectful school culture.

Teaching and Learning

  • Promote consistently high-quality teaching and learning across all Primary year groups.
  • Support curriculum planning progression and coherence across Early Years and Primary phases.
  • Monitor teaching practice through lesson observations learning walks and professional dialogue.
  • Use assessment data effectively to inform teaching interventions and school improvement.

Curriculum and Assessment

  • Support the effective implementation of the British curriculum or an equivalent international framework.
  • Ensure robust assessment tracking and reporting systems are in place and used effectively.
  • Support curriculum development to meet the needs of a diverse international pupil body.

Staff Development and Line Management

  • Support mentor and appraise Primary teaching staff.
  • Lead or contribute to professional development programmes and in-house training.
  • Support early career teachers and new staff in settling into the schools expectations and culture.

Pastoral Care and Safeguarding

  • Play an active role in promoting pupil wellbeing behaviour and safeguarding.
  • Support pastoral systems and work closely with teachers leaders and families.
  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are consistently implemented and understood.

Parent and Community Engagement

  • Build strong professional relationships with parents and carers.
  • Support effective communication between the school and its community.
  • Represent the Primary leadership team in meetings and school events as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements

  • A recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE QTS state certification or equivalent.
  • Significant experience teaching within the Primary phase.
  • Proven leadership or middle-leadership experience within a Primary setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the British curriculum or an equivalent international primary curriculum.
  • Excellent communication organisational and leadership skills.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience working in an international or bilingual school environment.
  • Experience supporting curriculum development or whole-school initiatives.
  • A strong understanding of data-informed school improvement.
  • Experience across both Early Years and Upper Primary.
