The Pacific West Region is recruiting for Temporary seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between sites depending on funding weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending upon work availability and funding.
These positions are located in:
Major Duties include:- Operating gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction heavy equipment to grade surfaces to rough specifications on all types of terrain
- Operating road graders crawlers tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades backhoes front-end loaders excavators wheel loaders trench diggers skid steers and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments
- Hooking up attachments use booms and/or adjust engineering equipment settings for level angle or depth.
- Use equipment to perform such functions as cutting moving digging grading and rolling earth sand stone and other materials and maintain ditches road shoulders and beds.
- Load secure and drive equipment to and from project sites.
Working Conditions: This position is required to perform work both inside and outside with most of the work performed outside. The incumbent works in rain mud snow and in hot/cold temperatures and is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from noise vibration dust dirt fumes exhaust oils heat cold and dampness. The operation of large and complicated equipment in difficult circumstances increases the incumbents exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent is frequently subjected to the possibility of receiving cuts abrasions bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. When working inside the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation. The incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.

- You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to addition this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid drivers license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operators License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) and at your own expense all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid drivers licenses whether current or past possessed by you.
- You must possess and maintain a current Class A(or higher) Commercial Drivers License with a Tanker endorsement.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
- (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
- Ability to Do the Work of the position without More than Normal Supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
- Operation of motor vehicles.
- Work Practices (including keeping things neat clean and in order.)
- Ability to Interpret instructions specifications etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).
- Ability to Drive Safely (heavy equipment and motor vehicles).

- Reliability and Dependability as a Engineering Equipment Operator.
If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient you will receive no further consideration- This includes work experience performing the following duties: operate gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction heavy equipment to grade surfaces to rough specifications on all types of terrain to include mountains and steep slopes graded curves and shoulders hilly forests rocky ground and other surfaces with similar rough features. Operate heavy engineering equipment such as road graders crawlers tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades backhoes front-end loaders excavators wheel loaders trench diggers skid steers and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. Operate various types of equipment and trucks on congested roadways in inclement weather and on steep and narrow roadways. Operate road graders to grade and ditch and plow or clear debris and brush; end loaders to move dirt and materials plow snow and/or fill trucks; backhoes to dig and backfill ditches; dozers to rough in new construction sites; and/or other equipment to rip ice sand icy road surfaces stockpile gravel and woodchips remove stumps move rocks clear brush and understory species perform land fill maintenance mitigate erosion and/or remove sand snow or debris from roads and parking lots during winter months and following weather events. Often work independently with little to no supervision. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent temporary or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.
Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402b7) based on series and grade anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period you are still welcome to apply. However please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels project needs employee performance or other considerations.
Government housing may be available.
Travel transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employees responsibility.
