Description:
Jefferson County is looking for an experienced Safety Coordinator to join the Road & Bridge team. The Safety Coordinator (Road & Bridge) is responsible for investigating safety violations accidents incidents and misconduct and for recommending appropriate corrective actions. This position oversees workers compensation claims and nonjob-related injuries for the division and develops administers and coordinates the employee safety management program including the facilitation of safety training initiatives.
The Safety Coordinator collaborates closely with staff and management to support organizational and operational improvements. This role also represents the Road & Bridge division during emergency events such as snowstorms fires floods and public health incidents by participating in Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activities.
This position maintains on-call availability to respond to accidents snow operations and natural disasters including forest fires mudslides floods and blizzards.
COMPENSATION:
Hiring Range: $84000 $95000 USD Annually
Compensation will be determined based on education experience and skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Develops and administers the various components of the Road & Bridge Safety Management Program to ensure a safe environment consistent with regulatory and organizational requirements and needs. Responsible for facilitating and coordinating safety training programs to ensure employees safely perform tasks in compliance with all safety regulations and agency policies. Notifies the appropriate parties to resolve issues.
- In partnership with the Safety & Compliance Division (S&C) conducts or assists in investigations regarding employee safety violations restitution for damaged R&B property accidents incidents and misconduct and makes recommendations for corrective action within a formalized discipline and grievance process. Offers direction to management in regard to safety employee relations decisions.
- Oversees workers compensation and non-job-related injuries for the division. Ensures adherence to workers compensation policies and guidelines in the case of on-the-job injuries. Assists the employee in receiving medical attention based on injury. Assigns modified duties based on restrictions and monitors medical report status throughout the duration of the injury with the S&C division.
- Monitors work zone inspections to improve safety increase mobility and reduce risk ensuring compliance with applicable plans policies and standards.
- Ensures compliance of personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Represents the Road & Bridge division in managing emergency events such as snow fire flood and health issues at the Emergency Operation Center EOC. Attends quarterly EOC training and meetings. Ensures potential hazardous containers and materials found on Road and Bridge sites and county right-of-way are reported to the appropriate authorities for disposal. Follows-up on cleanup to ensure the tasks are complete.
- Responds to emergencies and snow removal operations 24 hours a day seven days a week. Reports to an assigned shop within one hour of being called.
- Responsible for assisting with the basic development and training of fellow employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in public works or a related field
In addition to the minimum qualifications above the selected candidate must:
- Possess a valid drivers license for at least two (2) consecutive years prior to the hire date; candidates relocating from out of state must obtain a Colorado drivers license within 30 days of hire
- Obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months of hire and Traffic Control Supervisor certification within two (2) years of hire
- Complete an 8-hour DOT HAZMAT training course
- Obtain DOT HAZMAT General Awareness certification
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities that will lead to success in the role:
- Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification
- Certification related to Occupational Safety and Health
- Working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSA)
- Experience conducting accident investigations
- Experience developing writing and implementing safety procedures
- Demonstrated experience leading safety incentive programs and fostering a strong safety culture
- Ability to lead and participate in cross-functional committees
- Comfort and effectiveness in training facilitation and public speaking
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel
- Experience using Cartegraph
- Trenching and shoring experience
- Confined space entry experience
- Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) certification
- Demonstrated mentoring and coaching skills
