Description of Work

The State Library of North Carolina is seeking a well-rounded Reference Librarian
to join our team! This position serves as a reference librarian and is responsible for reference services related to North Carolina information legal questions regarding NC statutes government information and state government publications
related to North Carolina information reference for North Carolina culture and history United States history settlement and migration patterns and genealogy. The position also participates in planning developing and delivering presentations programs and tours and serves as a GHL liaison with other North Carolina and national organizationshistorical government and archival organizations. This position has the potential for hybrid work with a minimum of minimum of four days per week onsite.


Key Responsibilities

Provide reference assistance related to North Carolina government information North Carolina history and culture as well as southern history and genealogy engaging directly with the public in person via telephone and virtually via email and Chat responding to informational reader advisory and service requests daily.

Conduct research using library resources and provide instructional assistance in response to reference requests in-person via phone email or chat as appropriate.

Participate in planning and developing instructional and training materials and resource guides.

Provide library tours for various audiences and instructional training to the general public according to GHL programming needs.

Serve as team member on core reference team as well as other assigned GHL teams to represent Reference Services in other capacities in the Library.

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed onthe vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are notrequired. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience providing reference and/or research assistance in an academic public or special library.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and/or updating instructional and training materials.

  • Demonstrated professional public speaking and/or presentation skills public tours and delivering public presentations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property rights and/or federal copyright law relative to libraries/interlibrary loan.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting researchers in one of the following disciplines: North Carolina history North Carolina government and/or family history.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Weekly work schedule Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and participate in the librarys reference and research service desk rotation weekly and approximately one Saturday per month.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 30 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Education and Experience

Masters degree in library and information science

OR

A related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

Two years of professional librarian experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Government & Heritage Library is a hybrid library that offers in-person and virtual library services and collections. The library focuses on North Carolina history government and family history. Services include reference and instructional services to people of all backgrounds and ages.
