Job Summary

POSITION TITLE

3031 SCHOOL BUS DRIVER (WITH BENEFITS)

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs responsible semi skilled human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Transportation Supervisor.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally up to 10 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching walking pushing pulling lifting grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception peripheral vision visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts operation of machines operation of motor vehicles or equipment determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions extreme cold extreme heat noise vibration hazards and atmospheric conditions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Driving school bus; picking up and delivering students to/from school.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of school bus; reports operating and equipment deficiencies;
Washes bus; cleans bus inside and out;
Fuels bus as required;
Obeys all traffic laws and observes mandatory safety regulations for school bus operations;
Transports only authorized students;
Reports all accidents and completes required reports;
Conducts periodic emergency bus evacuation drills;
Transports students to special events and field trips;
Records mileage; maintains various records and prepares a variety of reports on activities;
Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed;
Makes bus available for periodic maintenance;
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children using patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials public associates and students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have reached the age of 19 by the first day of the school year and have three years driving experience. Must hold successful driving record or be willing to to train for a Commercial Driving License (CDL). Must pass. Must pass physical examination as prescribed by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
