The Role:

CBC News is looking for a creative editorial leader with a talent for shaping and driving multiplatform storytelling to lead our reporting teams specializing in entertainment news.

As the senior producer of this content unit you are a leader in breaking news and passionate about entertainment news and online trends in Canada and abroad. This is where you live! You have the ability to get ahead of trending stories as they unfold and ensure we are serving the news as it happens.

You have a deep understanding of how audiences engage with pop culture on social platforms like TikTok. You are an avid consumer of movies TV/streaming music and more.

You know how to pitch and shape stories both day-of and long term. You must be skilled in responding to daily news demands for multiple platforms and excel at organizing coverage of major events.

You understand the diversity of our audiences and strive to find voices and stories that connect with them.

You have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor and support a team to make great content. You have an open mind stay calm under pressure and have a great work ethic. You live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture. You have a thorough understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

An inclusive and collaborative approach to leadership is essential. We need someone who can maximize the reach and impact of our work by building connections with colleagues across all areas of CBC News (digital social FAST local current affairs network news).

Note that this role also includes overseeing some story pitches that focus on the topic of education as this is a secondary subject matter under the role.

Key Tasks:

  • Assign a team of multi-platform journalists with a priority on news stories

  • Break news and drive coverage on social digital broadcast audio and streaming

  • Pitch daily and advocate for entertainment stories in assignment meetings

  • Propose and plan live coverage for major events collaborating with teams across CBC

  • Ensure storytelling for video audio and text platforms has high production value

  • Ensure stories reflect Canadas geographic racial cultural and socio-economic diversity

  • Perform an initial copy edit or script vet of stories identifying what is lacking and clearly articulating to journalists how to improve storytelling and packaging

  • Support journalists pursuing enterprise stories balancing daily demands with original journalism

  • Work collaboratively with local and network news and program leaders as well as leaders in arts and CBC Music

  • Develop and maintain contacts with a wide variety of sources; use these sources for story ideas and angles

  • Consume entertainment news content and trends continuously across all media and social platforms.

Your Qualifications:

  • 5-10 years of relevant experience and recognized journalistic and leadership credentials

  • Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the evolving news media industry

  • Deep familiarity with social media and an ability to surface trending stories

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work cooperatively with team members and supervisors in high-pressure situations

  • Exceptional leadership skills and organizational ability

  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness with strong connections to diverse communities

  • Lived experience that broadens journalistic perspectives

  • Experience pursuing stories in under-represented communities

  • Ability to recognize important issues quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage

  • Solid technical grasp of broadcast and online production tools and methods

  • Ability to work overtime or weekends when required

  • University degree or equivalent
