Head of Operations & Facilities

Full-time Central Services

The British School in the Netherlands (BSN) is looking for an experienced manager to inspire and lead our Operations & Facilities department. The role will be based at Voorburg and will involve regular travel to our four school campuses based in Voorschoten Leidschenveen and Vlaskamp.

About the role

In this exciting and rewarding role you will be responsible for the estates facilities and operations across our multiple sites. This includes asset management contract management complex project management facility management and community services (student transport and school uniforms). You will be line managing our central-based Operations & Facilities Team and the on-site Concierge teams. You will be part of the strategy setting Senior Leadership Group and will work closely with the Heads of School and the Central Services departments (Finance Security IT Communications & Admissions and HR). You will report directly to the Chief Finance & Operations Officer (CFOO).

This is a demanding but incredibly interesting role an amazing opportunity for a creative independent and decisive candidate. You bring strong experience in:

  • Tendering and managing broad scale of (facility) contracts

  • Managing complex projects

  • Managing buildings and developing long-term plans

  • Leading and professionalising day-to-day operational support

  • Setting and managing budgets

  • Managing facility suppliers vendors and contractors.

In addition it is a plus if you have experience with developing innovative learning spaces and co-creating learning and working concepts that enhance the educational provision of our school.

About you

You have broad-spectrum skills and experience in real estate facility management and operations as well as strong organisation and interpersonal skills. You are a creative and dynamic leader a big picture thinker and a hands-on implementer. You have excellent communication skills and you have the ability to inspire and motivate all members of your team and to deliver projects to completion.

You are resourceful service-focused and you can work well with (external) professionals. You have good financial insights and can put effective processes in place for your team. You work cohesively with your colleagues in the schools and within Central Services aiming for Operational Excellence. Your English and Dutch is fluent both written and spoken.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic long-term planning development and managing of the premises contracts and projects

  • Preparation of yearly departmental budget (Operational and Capital Expenditures)

  • Developing effective relationships with staff across the schools assessing and responding to their needs providing them with support resulting in higher standards of the learning environment.

Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Management experience (at least 5 years experience in a similar role)

  • Demonstrated experience in high level project management procurement facility management and contract management

  • Strong financial insights

  • Experience in managing multiple sites

  • Experience of drafting management letters and reports

  • Basic knowledge of buildings and technical installations and maintenance

  • Some experience with implementing security measures (in collaboration with the Security Department)

  • Basic knowledge of (Dutch) Health and Safety regulations

  • Affinity with (primary/secondary) education

  • Some experience with Facility Management Information Systems (FMIS) is desired

  • Fluency in English and Dutch both written and spoken

  • At least a Bachelors degree (HBO) in Real Estate Management or in Facility Management

Salary and benefits

  • Gross monthly salary range:depending on experience

  • Holiday pay 9%
