Description of Work

This position will function as a VERT II (Vehicle/ Equipment Repair Technician Level II) within the New Bern Equipment Shop in Craven County. Employees perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service repair rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive heavy equipment as well as power tools. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanical work including but not limited to the following systems:

Preventive maintenance brakes (air and hydraulic) steering; tires and tubes; wheels rims and hubs; transmission (auto and manual); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gages; and air intake system.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: Salary Grade: NC08 / Recruitment Range $37782 - $66120.


Management prefers applicants with the following:

Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: lightmedium heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.

Knowledge of basic welding principles and application.
Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
Experience using a computer to obtain diagnostic and repair information.


Additional Job Description/Minimum Education and Experience of Requirement:

Employee will need the ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment and diagnoseproblems using diagnostic equipment prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipmentrepair. Employee will need the ability to understand both written and oral instructions move partsand materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment. Employee will need the ability to safelyoperate equipment for testing purposes. Employee will need the ability to work in indoor andoutdoor environments. Employee will need the ability to demonstrate commitment to provide a safeworking environment by leading by example. Employee will need the ability to read and interpretOriginal Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Employee will need the ability to read

schematicsdiagrams and sketches and possess the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Employeewill need the ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. The selected candidatefor this position may have to operate the fuel truck at times as needed. Safety toe footwear willbe needed.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid NorthCarolina Class A Commercial Drivers License with N endorsement. Either possession of a currentCommercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers Licensemust be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by FederalMotor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of -employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment a release form (ALCDRG-01)and a background

statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to checkwith previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Note: Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
