CBC Radio is looking for a Senior Producer to lead our national radio science program Quirks & Quarks. This is a permanent full time role based in Toronto.
About the Show
Hosted by Bob McDonald Quirks & Quarks presents science stories from around the world of relevance to Canadians. For 50 years the program has presented the latest discoveries on earth and beyond in an informative and accessible manner often with a dose of humour.
Your Role
As the Senior Producer of Quirks & Quarks you lead the team in producing a weekly program that runs Saturday afternoons across the country and is available everywhere as an on-demand podcast. Reporting to the Managing Editor your goals are to develop motivate and inspire your team and set the parameters for programming that inform and engage broad and diverse audiences on multiplatforms.
You are an experienced journalist a critical thinker and a creative problem-solver
You are flexible and adaptable eager to make programming and strategy changes based on key metric data listener feedback and industry trends.
You have a passion for and deep understanding of the latest scientific research and can identify what would be of value and of interest to our audiences. You have a clear understanding of how to convey the context meaning and significance of the latest scientific developments to a wide range of people on broadcast podcast and digital spaces.
You are an exceptional communicator a strong writer and an accomplished editor.
You have excellent leadership skills with a proven ability to direct staff resolve conflicts when they arise and implement training and development opportunities for your team. You also take an active role in broader CBC initiatives.
You are familiar with and adhere to CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and are committed to offering a diversity of perspective opinion and experience on your team and in the programming you present.
Key Tasks
Leads editorial story meetings
Approves and assigns program topics and determines the style pace tempo line-up and format of the show
Vets scripts for interviews documentaries and tape talks ensuring scientific accuracy framing and relevance
Writes show links and bills edits program and does final audio mix
Writes and produces promos for network and syndication
Manages schedules and other administrative tasks (timecards leaves etc.)
Coordinates and supervises the work of all staff who contribute to the program including freelancers and contributors in other departments
Establishes and implements program objectives.
Identifies and implements training and development opportunities for team members
Plans organizes and oversees special projects including remotes and live programming with the goal of connecting to communities across the country.
Prioritizes multiplatform distribution - broadcast podcast digital increasingly video on social and streaming platforms.
Delivers the program and promos to CBC presentation and international distributors
Responds to audience feedback complaints
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
Strong journalistic editorial and critical thinking skills
Superior leadership coaching and mentoring skills with the demonstrated ability to motivate teams successfully with empathy
Ability to assign and manage staff and coordinate and collaborate with other departments in a productive manner and mediate disputes as they arise.
Excellence in writing editing and incorporating sound into programming
Demonstrated experience in producing science journalism combined with an ability to choose stories of relevance to Canadians
High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism including deep familiarity with our JSP
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Extensive knowledge of and connection to a wide range of diverse communities across Canada.
Proven passion for digital strategy and innovation around audience engagement.
University degree or equivalent preferably in journalism or other media-related field
Minimum 5 years experience in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
