At a Glance!TheRecreation & Athletics Specialistis a key person for assisting students faculty staff and the public on our climbing wall. The Fitness Center Recreation & Athletics Specialist position will also assist in the daily operations of the newly remodeled LCC Fitness Center. The Lower Columbia College Fitness Center is an ancillary enterprise of Lower Columbia College. The LCC Fitness Center includes a state of the art fitness center with a cardio mezzanine climbing wall and a juice/shake bar.

The Recreation & Athletics Specialist will work 75 hours or less per month. This position is a non-permanent part-time position not to exceed 1050 hours in a consecutive 12-month period. The typical scheduled are between 6:00 am - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with clients on the climbing wall including; instructing bouldering top rope climbing and lead climbing activities for employees students and general public.
  • Belaying for group and school climbing sessions.
  • Perform route setting route maintenance and inventory recording responsibilities.
  • Must obtain/maintain current Belay Training Certification.
  • Ensure the safe operation and handling of climbing equipment
  • Provide expert customer service in the fitness facility. Promote a positive productive and professional working environment. Engaging in the practice of cooperation understanding respect and sensitivity for coworkers and members alike
  • Assist in maintaining facility maintenance and cleanliness
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the college as well as department policy and procedures directly related to fitness center operations
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Work effectively in the fitness center environment among students faculty staff alumni athletics and community
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of LCCs fitness center services and activities including fitness classes and events
  • Perform point of sale and gym software functions for fitness center purchases and memberships
  • Provide service at the Red Devil Juice/Shake Bar
  • Provide fitness center orientation sessions (including instruction on correct and safe use of equipment) for patrons at regular intervals and varied times throughout the year with emphasis at the beginning of academic quarters
  • Perform other related duties as required

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Indoor rock climbing experience (includes demonstration of belay skills and basic knowledge of climbing terminology)
  • Ability to learn and instruct community members on procedures for prevention of injury in climbing setting and ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification- or ability to obtain at first available training by LCC

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated route setting skills and knowledge of climbing procedures and practices.
  • Prior experience working in as a climbing instructor or route setter
  • Ability to climb 5.9 graded route.
  • AMGA/CWA certification preferred
  • Prior experience with preventative maintenance in rock climbing setting
  • Clerical customer service or closely related experience preferred
