Position Purpose summary:

The purpose of this program is to provide a safe welcoming space for 80 male refugee claimants to stay while they work through the various processes and procedures involved in their asylum application. Many have very limited English and thus having Arabic and/or French is highly desired. The caseworkers will provide supervision and support for the above participants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitors the environment and clients/residents to ensure safety and security; completes regular client/resident status checks and room searches as required

  • Develops and implements case management of assigned clients/residents; assists clients/residents in establishing goals monitoring progress and prepares discharge plan

  • Maintains and updates all appropriate documentation (including in-out and incident log books) related to clients/residents and initiates any new documentation; complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army

  • Provides safe storage and recording of prescribed medications

  • Coordinates and facilitates resident programming as required

  • Conducts all required shift change procedures prior to and after shift change

  • Performs intake and discharge procedures for clients/residents as assigned

  • Monitors appropriate behavior; intervenes in crisis situations provides emotional support and advocacy as required

  • Distributes funds to residents in accordance with established guidelines

  • Engages in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect

  • Performs required scheduled check-ins of residents on passes in community; escorts residents in the community when necessary and monitors behavior

  • Liaises with Police funders court personnel community agencies families and other staff members

  • Provides orientation to newly hired staff volunteers students

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education Level Attained:

  • The successful job applicant will have completed high school plus specialized courses of up to six months

  • Only people with relative social work schooling will be considered.

Note: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Special Licenses Diplomas Certifications or Requirements:

The successful applicant would have:

  • Degree in related social services field

  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR

  • Criminal Police Record Check

  • Vulnerable persons check

  • Violent crisis intervention training

  • Child Abuse Registry Check

Minimum Prior Related Experience:

One year but less than three years of prior related experience including frontline casework experience in a social service environment.

Physical Effort/Dexterity Required:

The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding and performing walk about and occasionally lifting/packing clients/residents property/personal effects and engaging in recreational activities.

Concentration Required:

The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information. The performance of the job requires attentive listening and observation of body language continuously monitoring the environment multitasking and reading.

Responsibility for Financial Resources:

The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly or on a relief basis or has responsibility for the wise us of Their own resources. They may be authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget

Responsibility for Human Resources:

The incumbent is responsible for their own time and effort only. They may demonstrate work methods to new employees volunteers and or students.

PREFERRED SKILLS / CAPABILITIES

  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience including experience with frontline work in a social services setting

  • French and/or Arabic language would be considered an asset

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.81 to $21.81 with a maximum of $21.81.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
