Overview
HarperCollins is looking for an Assistant General Counsel to join the legal team. This role will be primarily responsible for advising publishing colleagues on media law and related litigation.
Responsibilities
- The responsibilities of the role may include but are not limited to:
- Reading and vetting manuscripts with authors prior to publication.
- Responding to potential legal claims.
- Analyzing business/legal issues as they may apply to the company.
- Overseeing copyright statutory terminations.
- Advising on digital and traditional marketing and the sale of books.
- Strategizing and managing litigation.
- Assisting in other legal areas as the need arises.
Qualifications
- JD degree
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a law firm or media company
- Strong substantive knowledge of general media law issues including defamation copyright trademark right of publicity advertising and related fields
- Substantial experience in federal and state litigation practice
- Understanding and awareness of publishing industry
- Practical knowledge of business law preferred
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels across the organization
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

The salary for this position is $215000-$230000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidates experience industry knowledge technical and communication skills and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
