The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design Engineering & Construction is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

BASE SALARY INFORMATION

Engineering Assistant 1 -- $33.76 / hourly
Engineering Assistant 2 --
$38.91 / hourly


What you will be doing:

Engineering Assistant 1

  • Perform developmental-level engineering tasks under supervision applying standard practices to air surface transportation and building projects.
  • Assist in designing construction plans for simple and moderately complex projects including calculations and preparation of project reports.
  • Maintain project files develop written contract specifications and support plan reviews to ensure accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Coordinate with interdepartmental groups regulatory agencies and local governments; attend design reviews public hearings and workshops as needed.

Engineering Assistant 2

  • Perform complex engineering tasks with greater independence and initiative applying standard practices to air surface transportation and building projects.
  • Assist in designing construction plans for complex projects; serve as primary designer on simpler projects perform advanced calculations and prepare detailed reports and contract specifications.
  • Review and monitor the work of others for accuracy completeness and compliance; ensure proper plan layout and standards usage.
  • Coordinate with interdepartmental groups regulatory agencies consultants and local governments; attend design reviews public hearings workshops and field verification of site conditions.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is located in Fairbanks.

The DOT&PF complex is on Peger Road where design construction maintenance and support staff are all within walking distance. The role provides a dynamic blend of office work field visits and team collaboration with opportunities to engage directly with stakeholders. Intermittent summer travel and occasional winter travel may be required for site visits or meetings which could include travel by small plane or boat

Engineering Assistant 1:
Bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelors degree from an institution accredited by ABET with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelors degree with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:
The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.
Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1 or 2level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
