Job Summary:
The Sales Tax Manager is dedicated to supporting the Services entities of AFL. Reporting the Senior Tax Manager Sales Tax the incumbent will be involved in evaluating documenting and improving sales tax issues and projects for the Services entities.
Responsibilities:
- Proactively coordinate with Services sales teams to become aware of new jobs before contracts are finalized
- Review contracts for appropriate sales tax language and identify opportunities to minimize sales tax
- Coordinate with Accounting and Procurement to identify proper tax treatment and calculations for both invoicing and materials procurement
- Review tax calculations on invoices for large jobs
- Review operations for all Services entities to ensure business models and types of services offered are understood from a sales tax perspective.
- Evaluate nexus and recommend state registrations or account closures
- Partner with IT to select and assist implementing a sales tax engine in Dynamics or M365.
- Perform reverse audits on past jobs to identify exposure
- Review and approve customer exemption certificates
- Review requests for and issue vendor exemption certificates as appropriate
- Develop and implement appropriate tracking systems

- Independent able to direct own work as needed work well under limited supervision
- Interpersonal skills able to communicate issues questions and conclusions clearly with associates at all levels of the organization

Qualifications
- 8-10 years of direct sales tax experience with contract experience required
- Demonstrated analytical skills and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated experience with contract review process development and implementation
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent software skills including Excel Great Plains ERP
- Excellent research skills using one of the standard research platforms plus developing AI experience
- Experience with Vertex or OneSource sales tax software solution preferred
Working Conditions
- AFL is a fast paced and complex environment.
- Role can be hybrid with ability to reach Duncan SC or Mint Hill NC office within 2-3 hours.
- 20% travel to job sites
Education
- Bachelors degree Finance or Accounting
- CPA a plus but not required
- Consulting experience a plus but not required
- Industry experience a plus but not required
