Job Summary

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Transportation Mechanic

Reports to: Transportation Director

Purpose: Performs skilled and complex work in the operation inspection repair and maintenance of school buses and other district vehicles. Work includes diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues completing required inspections and ensuring vehicles meet safety and operational standards. The employee is expected to resolve routine and moderately difficult problems independently; unusually complex issues may be referred to a supervisor. Work is performed under general supervision and may be reviewed during and upon completion.

Qualifications Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with X P and S endorsements.
  • Valid North Carolina Vehicle Inspector License.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in vehicle maintenance or technical automotive training including at least two (2) years of experience directly related to school bus and automotive repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of:
    • School bus and vehicle operation and maintenance
    • Internal combustion engines and related mechanical systems
    • Tools equipment and procedures used in an automotive repair shop
    • North Carolina vehicle inspection laws and requirements
  • Ability to:
    • Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and determine appropriate repair methods
    • Read and interpret technical manuals diagrams and repair charts
    • Follow oral and written instructions
    • Perform the physical demands of the position including manual repair tasks
  • Other combinations of applicable education training and experience that provide the required knowledge skills and abilities may be considered.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventive maintenance repairs and service work on school buses and other district-owned vehicles.
  • Diagnoses mechanical electrical and system performance issues; troubleshoots and implements appropriate corrective measures.
  • Conducts required North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles inspections on buses and other school-owned vehicles.
  • Repairs and replaces brakes and brake components (including brake drums); adjusts and repairs steering suspension and drivetrain components.
  • Performs repairs and replacements on diesel-driven equipment.
  • Tests electrical systems and completes necessary repairs (including charging and generating systems).
  • Repairs vehicle doors lifts and related components to ensure proper operation and safety.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged vehicle body parts and may straighten frames as needed.
  • Rotates aligns and balances wheels; installs shock absorbers.
  • Adjusts timing mechanisms; replaces and sets ignition components; performs valve service as needed.
  • Installs services troubleshoots and repairs onboard technology systems including GPS vehicle-tracking components and video-recording systems.
  • Uses electronic system software to monitor performance and identify faulty units.
  • Maintains compliance with all safety procedures occupational health practices and a safe work environment.
  • Follows all Camden County Schools policies and procedures and all Transportation Department regulations.
  • Assists with mentoring and providing instruction to lower-level mechanics as assigned.
  • Performs general maintenance and related duties as needed.
  • Serve as a backup bus driver as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director Chief Auxiliary Officer and/or Superintendent.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of vehicle and school bus repair techniques and safety standards.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards and safe shop practices.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and supervisors.
  • Skill in the safe and effective use of shop tools machinery and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches diagrams and repair charts.

Additional/Special/Physical Requirements:

  • Employee must provide own basic tools.
  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and frequently requires operating automotive equipment and vehicles.
  • Regularly uses computers and a variety of shop equipment including hand and power tools and automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Work involves regular contact with school system staff contractors vendors and external agencies.
  • Work is considered heavy physical work including the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Must be able to:
    • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 80 pounds and frequently lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds
    • Occasionally push or pull up to 80 pounds and frequently push or pull up to 10 pounds
    • Move machinery safely
    • Frequently work on ladders; perform handling and reaching
    • Occasionally climb crawl kneel crouch perform overhead lifting stoop perform fine manipulation bend key (keyboard) and balance
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials gases and chemicals; moving mechanical parts; and inclement weather conditions.

Term of Employment: 12 Months

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Grade: NC08 ($2982-$5219 monthly based on training and

experience)
