Our recently established research group develops and studies human-relevant models for neurobiology. We use induced pluripotent stem cells to generate cell-based models of the human brain so-called brain organoids. These 3D brain models allow us to study neurotoxicity factors influencing neurodevelopment - such as sex hormones environmental toxicants and genetic or developmental disorders - and the mechanisms shaping early brain function.
About the PhD project:
In this project you will generate and characterize human brain organoids from male and female donors and analyze their electrophysiological activity using multi-electrode array (MEA) technology. A central goal is to quantify electrophysiological network metrics and connect them to developmental trajectories within the organoids. You will investigate how the factors mentioned above affect early network formation cellular differentiation maturation and functional connectivity in this model system.
