This Junior Extension Agent position is a non-tenurable faculty position to work closely with Ulana Ike Center of Excellence (UI) and the Pili Na Moku initiative to develop new extension and outreach areas relevant to UIs priority areas of Indigenous science and coastal and marine climate resilience and adaptation.


Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will have shared responsibilities in supporting UI as part of the cross-institutional project Rising Voices Changing Coasts: National Indigenous and Earth Sciences Convergence Hub (RVCC) and the Pili Na Moku initiative. RVCC has an overarching goal of facilitating convergence research on coastal hazards in a community context through co-production between Social and Earth Sciences and Indigenous Knowledge experts. Pili Na Moku is a cross-sector collaborative project that seeks to reinvigorate the moku system applied in a contemporary context to build a resilient future for the Hawaiian Islands. The project focuses on the functionality of interconnected ecosystems and of governance systems that balance local place-based knowledge and stewardship with centralized decision-making. This position will also be responsible for developing and/or expanding projects relevant to UI and providing support in the overall operation of the UI Center including implementing project activities generating products and deliverables facilitating training and developing new areas of research relevant to the Centers priorities.

The responsibilities and primary functions of the position include but are not limited to:

  1. Assist the Ulana Ike Principal Investigator in fulfilling obligations to the RVCC National Indigenous and Earth Sciences Convergence Hub including the following functions:
    • Support projects focused on historical and contemporary climate and ecosystem cycles in Hawaii to inform models that help to address climate-related hazards.
    • Support efforts that bridges multiple knowledge systems to inform the development of potential strategies for climate resilience.
    • Participate in annual meetings and other Hub knowledge exchange activities to share Pacific Island Region strategies for addressing coastal hazards and learn from other contributing Indigenous communities.
  2. Assist in Pili Na Moku project activities including the following functions:
    • Work with the five Moku Coordinators to identify interests and needs that benefit local communities and the broader goals of Pili Na Moku.
    • Collect historical and archival information directed by Moku research needs including research drawing on primary olelo Hawaii resources.
    • Support the development of maps and other visual tools to communicate research findings.
    • Support projects that bridges multiple knowledge systems to inform the development of potential strategies for climate resilience.
    • Perform specialized Cooperative Extension or Sea Grant Extension functions.
  3. Develop projects relevant to furthering priorities of the Ulana Ike Center of Excellence including the following functions.
    • Write and secure extramural funding for research projects conducting innovative and actionable co-produced research utilizing multiple knowledge systems including Ike Hawaii.
    • Support and develop ongoing UI research projects.
    • Publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Develop researchproposals to funding agencies that add capacity and/or provide additional resources in support of current project objectives or enhancing Sea Grant capacity to increase resilience in the state and region
  5. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A Bachelors degree from a college or university of recognized standing with the major work in the field of HawaiianLanguage Hawaiian History Indigenous Politics Education Indigenous Studies or related field.
  2. Evidence of ability for successful practice inoutreach and Cooperative Extension or Sea Grant Extension.
  3. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  4. Proficiency in Olelo Hawaii and experience conducting research using Hawaii archival and historic databases such as Mahele records and nupepa databases.
  5. Demonstrated ability to support projects spanning multiple disciplines and knowledge systems.
  6. Demonstrated experience working among Native Hawaiians and/or other Indigenous groups in research-related activities.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. A Masters degree from a college or university of recognized standingin a relevant field (Hawaiian Language Hawaiian History Indigenous Politics Education).
  2. Ability to communicate and collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds.
  3. Demonstrated project management experience.
  4. Working knowledge of community-based biocultural restoration efforts in Hawaii.
  5. Knowledge and experience working with ethical frameworks for Indigenous research partnerships such as the CARE principles and the Kulana Noii.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to develop and provide presentations to community groups various government agencies at all levels and other user groups.
  7. Knowledge of the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Programs mission and strategic priorities.
