Project Summary
The Senior Writer / Content Strategist develops edits and strategizes content across multiple platforms to advance NSFs science communication objectives. This role produces high-quality accurate and accessible written products on complex scientific and policy topics ensuring alignment with federal communication standards and stakeholder engagement goals.
Role Summary
The Senior Writer / Content Strategist is responsible for translating complex scientific technical and policy information into clear engaging narratives suitable for diverse audiences including the public Congress and scientific stakeholders. This role supports OLPA leadership by producing content for web print and multimedia platforms while adhering to federal accessibility plain-language and SEO/AEO standards.
Primary Responsibilities
- Write and edit articles white papers fact sheets blogs press releases web pages and other publications on science topics of stakeholder interest including sensitive or potentially controversial topics.
- Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language for non-expert audiences.
- Draft and edit web content summarizing NSF policies and guidance for proposers and awardees.
- Conduct research and fact-checking collaborating with OLPA staff program officials and scientists to ensure accuracy and clarity.
- Ensure all written products comply with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility standards.
- Apply SEO and AEO principles where appropriate to improve content discoverability.
- Deliver two professional writing samples demonstrating ability to communicate complex topics clearly and effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in journalism communications public policy or a science-related field (preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of professional speechwriting and leadership communications experience.
- At least 3 years supporting science-focused or research organizations.
- Demonstrated experience writing for senior executives and public officials.
- Proficiency in AP Style plain-language writing and scientific accuracy editing.
- Familiarity with federal communication requirements including the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 compliance.
- Knowledge of SEO and AEO principles.
- Submission of two writing samples is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting federal agencies or scientific funding organizations.
- Experience supporting congressional communications or testimony preparation.
- Familiarity with federal review and clearance processes.
