Project Summary

The Senior Technical Writer-Editor develops edits and manages technical and scientific content for NSFs publications digital platforms and communications. The role ensures clarity accuracy accessibility and adherence to federal standards while translating complex technical information into plain language for diverse audiences.

Role Summary

The Senior Technical Writer-Editor is responsible for producing and editing high-quality content for NSF including web pages reports blogs fact sheets and press materials. This position ensures content is accurate accessible and aligned with NSF messaging standards. The role also supports congressional materials testimony and executive communications working closely with digital and multimedia teams.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Write and edit articles fact sheets blogs reports web content and press materials.
  • Translate complex scientific and technical topics into clear plain-language communications for non-expert audiences.
  • Conduct research and fact-checking through source documents and SME interviews.
  • Edit content for AP Style NSF style standards grammar and clarity.
  • Ensure all content complies with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility standards.
  • Support the drafting and editing of congressional materials testimony and executive-level communications.
  • Collaborate with digital and multimedia staff to create integrated cross-platform content.
  • Apply SEO and answer engine optimization (AEO) principles to web content.
  • Submit two professional writing samples demonstrating ability to communicate technical topics clearly.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in journalism communications science or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of professional writing and editing experience.
  • At least 3 years writing about scientific or technical subjects.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AP Style and scientific editing.
  • Experience creating both short- and long-format content including press releases fact sheets blogs reports and web pages.
  • Experience conducting research and fact-checking using source documents and SME interviews.
  • Familiarity with federal communication requirements including the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 compliance.
  • Knowledge of SEO and AEO principles.
  • Submission of two writing samples is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience writing for federal agencies or research institutions.
  • Familiarity with CMS platforms and web publishing workflows.
  • Experience supporting controversial or high-visibility science topics.
