Job Title of the role: Manufacturing Design Engineer

Location: Peoria IL - Building AB for now. Eventually they will move to Building KK in East Peoria IL in mid-late 2026 after renovations are complete.
Open to accept fully remote candidates: no. Consultant must be on site 5 days per week.
Details/Scope of the project: The Platform Design Engineering team is responsible for delivering transmissions and axle systems for Caterpillar Wheel Loader machines. The job entails end-to-end design development validation delivery to production and ongoing support of production transmission and axle system arrangements. The team collaborates globally with engineering support teams from China Europe India Mexico and Brazil and works extensively with business support teams such as purchasing/procurement commercial/sales business resources/accounting and manufacturing/assembly. The job ranges from detailed design such as modeling detailing Finite Element Analysis tolerance stack-up analysis and general principles from machine design materials and physics. Seniors on the team will lead large-scale programs that often span 3-5 years from start to finish and include an extensive amount of integration planning and technical knowledge. The job is often referred to as different every day due to the vast amount of support from new product development and design to ongoing support of existing designs in the field which include manufacturing quality and cost accountability.
Job Activities:
- Support structured component New Product Introduction & New Source Introduction development per Client standard practices while meeting time cost and quality goals
- Support resolution of CPI and NPI issues using structured problem-solving methods such as 5 why and fishbone
- Support NPI/CPI builds and teardowns as needed
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams locally and others worldwide to drive zero-defect focused design and process collaboration
- Support transmission and axle End of Line Test by analyzing test data and providing engineering assessments for parameters outside of limits
- Support manufacturing deviation requests by performing engineering analysis and determining disposition of material and/or rework options
- Actively participate in component and system DFMEAs and PFMEAs as needed
- Communicate technology and project status to supporting teams project stakeholders customers and global manufacturing facilities

What are the soft skills required: - Will need someone that can work autonomously - Not afraid to take on something new and ask questions Cannot have someone who waits for someone to tell them what to do. - Not someone who needs their handheld especially with the state of the team right now - Someone with demonstrated project experience - shows teamwork capability and ability to navigate a large org - Someone confident enough to take on work without being hand-held. - Someone not afraid to ask for what they need. Someone comfortable with asking for more work and not waiting for work to come to them.
Any Specific industry backgrounds required: Drivetrain experience with power systems axels transmissions with real design experience that can cut a lot of time out of the onboarding process. Powertrain or electrical components vs mechanical Design and validation processes are similar. Anything power system related Even Engines - there will be similar components - like pistons rings liners CAT has shafts and gears that rotate seals like engines Torque transfer speed transfer there is a lot of similarities Engines transmissions axels final drives all good experience
