Description:

In the absence of the Sergeant supervises patrol activities during an assigned shift including assigning staff reviewing reports and riding patrol as necessary; prepares reports complaints affidavits and other related technical/legal documents; resolves day-to-day operational problems and questions arising from staff and the public; performs the full range of duties of subordinate officers when necessary for the efficient effective and timely operation of the Police Department.

Qualifications:

High School GED or equivalent AND has obtained the rank of Police Officer III with the Logan City Police Department.

Must be certified by the State of Utah as a Law Enforcement Officer.

Must possess a valid Utah Operators License.

Officer cannot currently be under a CAP or any other disciplinary action.

TESTING PROCESS:

The date of the written testing will be March 4 2026 at 3:30 p.m. Individual times for the oral board will be provided shortly after the application deadline. The testing process will be divided into four phases over a one-day period:

Education will be weighted as 15% of overall score.

  • Associates Degree 5 points
  • Bachelors Degree 10 points
  • Masters/Doctorates Degree 15 points

Experience will be weighted as 25% of the overall score.

  • Each full year of law enforcement experience 2 points

Oral Board will be weighted as 30% of the overall score.

Written Exam will be weighted as 30% of the overall score.

Responsibilities:

Helps in the training of subordinate officers in various law enforcement policies procedures and techniques to maintain/improve the efficiency effectiveness and professionalism of the Logan Police Department; prepares records of shift activity and communicates shift information to supervisor of next shift; evaluates performance of assigned staff; prepares reports regarding monthly activities and significant incidents for command staff review. Supervises collection and preservation of case evidence including ensuring that less experienced staff follow appropriate investigative and chain of custody procedures sending evidence to the state crime lab and coordinating/communicating with the lab regarding processing the evidence; performs a variety of case management oriented activities including working with prosecutors regarding disclosure of information/arraignments maintaining case files and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies. Assists in the training of less experienced staff regarding techniques processes and procedures for crime scene processing evidence collection/identification fingerprinting and investigative skills; preserves and documents crime scene by processing the scene for fingerprints and taking still photographs video taping and/or sketching the crime scene; prepares reports complaints affidavits and other related technical/legal documents regarding the progress findings and results of the investigative process. Secures and investigates crime scenes to ensure that the collection preservation and handling of physical evidence/property meets established legal standards; interviews/interrogates victims suspects and witnesses to obtain/verify information pertinent to the investigation; gathers information and evidence using a variety of technical surveillance equipment techniques and procedures; appears in court to present evidence/sworn testimony regarding the facts of the case/investigative process.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of City of Logan ordinances to be enforced. Knowledge of State Federal and County statutes codes and ordinances to be enforced. Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices including investigation identification patrol traffic control records management report preparation and custody of persons and property. Knowledge of the equipment used in law enforcement including weaponry communications and automotive equipment. Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision including performance evaluation and progressive discipline. Knowledge of the location of streets and addresses in the City of Logan. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and regulatory agency/organization staff City officials criminal justice system staff and the public. Skill in understanding and interpreting complex statutes ordinances regulations and standards. Skill in reviewing and evaluating the work of subordinate staff to ensure that established law enforcement operation standards are met. Skill in preparing reports documenting the facts and actions regarding criminal/civil incidents. Skill in communicating using a standard two-way radio. Skill in conducting investigations of criminal activities.
